Last week Governor Stuart approved

“One of our leading farmers,” says a
local paper, “found a cigar in his small
son’s pocket, the other day, on coming
home after a shooting trip. The farmer
confiscated the cigar and whipped the
boy with the rope used to tie the family
mule at night. Then the farmer light-
ed the cigar and started to smoke it
himself. It was loaded. It exploded
and burned the farmer’s lilacs off his
physiognomy and set fire to the barn.

Henry Dively, who has figured prom-
inently in the courts of Somerset
county from time to time, on charges

was sentenced to seven years. in the
| penitentiary, last Friday, by - Judge
who also imposed a fine of
| $300° and eosts of prosecttion.on Dively.
| This is the result of a horse-stealing
| scrape. Dively is an Allegheny town-
| ship farmer who has. more bad notoriety
{ than good reputation.

Mrs. Sally Livengood, who for some
time has been living with her daughter,
Mrs. W. H. Dill, in Meyersdale, will
sell a lot of household effects at her
former place of residence, corner Ord
street and Smith avenue, this borough,
on Saturday afternoon, May 25th.
Everybody should attend the sale, as
many old-time artieles will be sold
that are eagerly sought after, these
days. Mrs. Livengood is still quite ac-
tive and enjoying good health, although
not far from 90 years of age.
Negotiations have been opened by
the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Compa-
ny with the Kendall Lumber Company
for the purchase of the latter’s narrow
gauge line extedning north from Moun-
tain Lake park. This line will be re-
built, and the Baltimore & Ohio will
then have a new direct line from Con-
fluence on the main line, to Mountain
Lake park, on the Baltimore & Ohio
Southwestern. While there has been
talk of building such a cut-off for some
years, it is now authoritatively stated
thatthe railroad company intends to
take the work up in earnest, says the
Somerset Democrat.

~ Yesterday was the 43d anniversary
_of the battle of New Market, Va. in
which some of the ‘Frosty Sons of
Thunder” got a very warm reception.
The old boys of the 54th Penna. Vols.
were up against it hard en that occa-
sion. Sixty-four men of the. company
belonged to were in the fight, and only
thirty-two came out of it, says Mr.
Lichty. Col. Campbell’s horse, a fine
steed captured on a former occasion
from the rebels, got away from the
colonel during the New Market fight,
and went over into the rebel lines.
The colonel seeing where he went, ex-
claimed: ‘Let him go; he knows he’s
a d—d rebel, anyhow !”
Edward Davis, who for a year or
more was employed by the West Salis-
bury Feed Company, severed his con-
nection with that concern on Tuesday
last, he and his brother having pur-
chased a tract of timber on Negro Moun-
tain, which they will forthwith begin to
convert into lumber. Edward will
move to Springs, where THe Star will
keep him posted on the news of this
locality. He is a most axcellent young
man, and like “Bert” Engle, the man-
ager of the West Salisbury Feed Com-
pany, is very popular with the many
customers of that concern. His place
will be filled by Harvey Newman,
eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Newman. We wish abundant success
to Mr. Davis in his new business, and
also to the young man who will take
his place in the store.
