My Hair
Ran Away
Don’t have a falling out with
your hair. It might leave you!
Then what? That would mean
thin, scraggly, uneven, rough
hair. Keep your hair at home!
Fasten it tightly to your scalp!
You can easilydo it with Ayer’s
Hair Vigor. It is something
more than a simple hair dress-
ing. It is a hair medicine, a
hair tonic, a hair food.
The best kind of a testimonial —
gold for over sixty years.”

T. W.Gurley’s jewelry establishment,
in Meyersdale, was broken open and
robbed, Tuesday night. It is reported
that a lot of watches, revolvers and
“blackjacks” were stolen. For reasons
which are apparent, the general opinion
seems to be that Gurley has no right to
kick on robbery.
Somerset borough has passed an or-
dinance providing for the proper grad-
ing and paving of the large public
square spoken of as the diamond. The
people over there ought to pave their
whole town, as the town is wealthy
enough to stand it, and it would be
economy in the end.

The citizen who cannot get away for
a vacation may not be nearly so un-
fortunate as he thinks he is. There is
a whole lot of rot about the vacation
business, anyway, especially when it
involves the expenditure of money
which prudent thrift would dictate
should be saved for the beginning of a
gareer in business or the establishment
of a home for young people who expect
to get married. —EX.
The editor is indebted to ‘‘Jesse”
Slick for a free ride to Grantsville, last
Sunday. We are always pleased to
visit our old native town, especially
with on old friend like “Jesse” Slick,
who, like ourself, spent his happiest
days in and about Grantsville. We
met many of our old-time friends at
the funeral of our aged friend and
cousin, Mr. Samuel J. Beachy. and the
sadness of the occasion was the only
regrettable feature of our visit.
You can see the poison Pine-ules
clears out of the kidneys and bladder.
A single dose at bedtime will show you
more poison upon rising the next morn-
ing than can be expelled from the sys-
tem in any other way. Pine-ules dis-
solve the impurities, lubricate the kid-
neys, cleanse the bladder, relieve pain
and do away with back-ache speedily,
pleasantly, permanently. Sold by Elk
Lick Pharmacy. 9-1
A couple of drunken young men from
Meyersdale were arrested in this town,
Sunday last, by Policeman Frank
Wagner, for fast driving and cruel
treatment of the horses they were
driving. They were fined about $5.00
apice. and also had to pay some costs.
They deserved a much saltier dose
than they received from the Burgess,
and one of them in particular, should
have been locked up and given another
fine for his profanity and threats
against the officer.
If all reports are true, and they come
pretty straight, several professional
men in 2 town not a thousand miles
from Salisbury need a few liberal doses
of buckshot administered by irate hus-
bands whose wives’ affections have
been alienated by men who are a dis-
grace to their profession. One of the
home-destroyers is reported to have
been given a severe thumping by a
wronged husband, recently, and if the
husband had killed the other fellow, no
one would have censured him for it.
We still hear of farmers and others
killing blacksnakes. People who know
about the habits of snakes say that the
blacksnakes are harmless, and are ex-
ceedingly useful on the farm in de-
stroying field mice, and about the barn
to keep both rats and mice away. If
they were poisonous or vicious there
might be some excuse for destroying
them, but they are neither. As for
them attacking people, we would rather
see an attack than hear of it. A Cecil
township farmer used to protect them
on his farm, and he had some large
ones, and no person ever heard of an
individual being attacked by one.—
Canonsburg Herald.
A hundred years ago the best phy-
sician would give you a medicine for
your heart without stopping to consider
what effect it might have on the liver.
Even to this good day cough and cold
medicines invariably bind the bowels.
This is wrong. Bee’s Laxative Cough
Syrup with Honey and Tar acts on the
bowels—drives out the cold—clears the
head, relieves all coughs, cleanses and
strengthens the mucous membranes of
the throat, chest, lungs and bronchial
tubes. Sold by Eik Lick Pharmacy.

Mr. and Mrs. John Chamberland, of
Connellsville, Pa., arrived in Salisbury,
Friday noon, for a visit with Mr. and
Mrs. J. T. Jeffery. They made the
trip from Connellsville to this place in
a buggy, and from here they drove to
Lonaconing, Md., with Mr. and Mrs.
Jeffery, where they visited friends,
Saturday and Sunday. Monday morn-
ing Mr. and Mrs. Chamberland return-
were much pleased with their overland
trip through the mountains, although
they saw two “spooks” while coming
over Big Savage, Sunday night. One
“gpook was dressed in white, and one
in dark clothes, and the “spooks” were
more startled than those who suddenly
chanced to come upon them.
Last Monday Mr. and Mrs. John
Rees received a letter from their son
George, who is in the U. 8S. marine ser-
vice, and now at Anapolis, Md., stating
that he has consumption in an advane-
ed stage, and requesting that some of
the family, and his sweetheart, Miss
Melissa Lowry, come to visit him at
once, as the Government proposes to
send him to New Mexico for the bene-
fit of his health. Mrs. Rees, accom-
panied by her daughter Marion and
Miss Lowry, started for Anapolis on
Monday night. We hope that there is
yet chance for George's recovery, and
we regret exceedingly to learn of his
illness, which was a shock to his par-
ents and other friends bere when they
heard of it. The young man was at
home some time ago on a furlough, and
while he had a cough at the time, no
one suspected that he had consumption.
His term of enlistment will not expire
for a year or more, and there is no
doubt that the Government will do
everything possible to restore him to
health.
Solomon Baker Dead.
Solomon Baker, one of the oldest
residents of Grantsville district, Gar-
rett county, Md., died at the home of
his son John, last Friday, at the ripe
age of 85 years, 10 montbs and some
days. Deceased was a generous-heart-
ed, kindly disposed person, and he had
a wide circle of friends who turned out
to pay their last sad respects to his
memory, at the funeral, which was held
at the Maple Grove German Baptist
Brethren church, near Grantsville, last
Sunday afternoon. The funeralservice
was conducted by Rev. Samuel Miller.
Mr. Baker 1s survived by four sons—
Samuel, John, Daniel and Simon, also
by one daughter—Mrs. Daniel Maust.
Another daughter of the deceased, and
his wife, died some years ago.
Samuel J. Beachy Dead.
Samuel J. Beachy, one of the oldest
and most respected citizens of Grants-
ville, Md.. died at his home in that
town on Friday, the 13th inst. He was
widely known as an auctioneer and
veterinary surgeon in his younger days,
and he also served a term in the Mary-
land Legislature, some twenty years
ago. Mr. Beachy had a keen sense of
humor, and as an amusing story-teller
and impersonator, he had few equals.
Had he been trained for the stage, he
would have become a great comedian.
He was also a man of great generosity
and hospitality, and as a result he had
many warm friends.
The funeral took place last Sunday
at 10:30 a. m., the local M. E. parson
officiating, and the service was attend-
ed by a large concourse of people. Mr.
Beachy was born of Amish parentage,
and reared in that faith, but joined the
Methodist Episcopal church some years
later, and remained a faithful member
of that denomination until death.
He is survived by his wife and six
children, also by two brothers and two
sisters. His surviving brothers are
Jonas J. Beachy, a prominent farmer
of Garrett county, Md., and Dr. Gideon
J. Beachy, the well-known dentist of
Cumberland, Md. Deceased was aged
80 years, 3 months and 11 days.
LOOK A LITTLE AHEAD.
It is always well to have a box of
salve in the house. Sunburn, cuts,
bruises, piles and boils yield to De-
Witt’s Witch Hazel Salve. Should
keep a box on hand at all times to pro-
vide for emergencies. For years the
standard, but followed by many imi-
tators. Be sure you get the genuine
