INTERESTING NORTH DAKOTA
LETTER.
Zion, N
Dear STAR FoLgs:—
A few lines from the North Star
State may not comejamiss in the col-
umns of “The Merry Twinkler” at this
time and season. I am quite sure that
at least some of THE STAR patrons are
interested in the growth and general
welfare of the “Great Northwest.” I
am glad to state that the past winter
was milder than usual, and our spring
season opened up on regular calendars
time. March took all the snow away,
and April was one of the finest I re-
member of in my whole lifetime.
The farmers commenced stirring the
soil the first week of the month, and by
the second, seeding was under full
headway in many parts of the state,
except in the Red River Valley, where
work was delayed on account of the
overflowing banks of the river. The
first two weeks, however, of the present
month were quite cool and windy. On
the 6th and 7th there were snow flur-
ries, and ice formed during night-time
Last week it was blustery, dust storms
and gusts of rain, but this week it is
warm, and we had good thunder show-
ers three nights in succession. Today
it is raining, and the teams and hands
are having an extra day of rest. The
bulk of grain is sown, quick germina-
tion takes place, and the} early sown
fields nre a beautiful carpet of green.
Indeed, the cenditions of climate and
soil could. not be better just now, and
if nothing befalls our present prospects,
we may hope to realize another bounti-
ful harvest.
There is great atively all over the
state in every branch of the industries.
New lines of railways and extensions
will be made, telephone lines and rural
mail routes are getting more numerous
each succeeding month, and what is
true of this state is equally so of those
adjoining us, and also of Canada, just
north of us. But I need not dwell on
these facts, as every newspaper and
magazine is full in almost every issue
about the developments of these long
neglected states and provinces.
This season I have put out only the
east half of my half section of land, and
shall summer-fallow the whole west
half, lying in one body a mile long by a
quarter of a mile wide. The time was
when a 20-acre field back east looked
as large to me as a quarter section
does here, and yet this latter is only an
acre patch, as compared with the many
bananza farms found in many sections
of the western states.
In conclusion, I am happy to state
further that I am still in my usual good
state of health, have not had a sick day
nor missed a meal since in the state,
now going on 10 years.
I am anxiously awaiting the com-
pletion of the Salisbury electric rail-
way, or learn of a passenger coach on
the B.& O. branch from Meyersdale,
for I assure you nothing would please
us old-timers better than to come home
and be accorded the privilege and
pleasure of riding into old Salisbury in
one or the other of these modern con-
veniences ; but they will have to hustle,
or else the flying machine or air ship
will get ahead of them yet.
Respectfully,
M. P. LicHrY.
P.S. Just got a surprise visit from
my nephew, N. W. Neiman, of Aurora,
I11., who brought his mother. my sister
Susan, up to spend the summer with
me. I knew of their intentions, but did
not expect them so soon. But it’s all
right, even if they did catch me with
plenty of dirt and everything upside-
down. Most North Dakotans don’t
clean house, anyway, until the seed-
ing time is over. M.P.L.

SUPERIORITY PROVES ITSELF.

A Farmer on Advertising.
I’ve been soaked a good many times
since I started in business for myself,
and I note that it has always been in
the article that wasn’t advertised. I
started into the getting-soaked busi-
ness by buying a lightning rod per foot
and settling for it per inch.
That soaking was followed up by the
purchase of a patent gate that wasn’t
advertised. It was sold to me on such
close margin, the agent said, that the
firm couldn’t afford to advertise it.
I’ve bought everything from hedge
fence to encyclopedias that wasn’t ad-
vertised, and if there is'a piece of un-
advertised furniture on this place that
is any occount, I’ve not fallen over it.
I have gotten so that when an agent
calls on me with something ¢I don’t
understand, I ask him where it is ad-
vertised. If he can’t show me any-
thing but a pocketful of handbills, I
call the dogs.
I don’t believe that an advertisement
will make a good article out of a bad
one, but I am all-fired certain that it
is not going to spoil a sure thing. If a
fellow can’t notify me in j advance
through some paper that he has a win-
ner, he can’t do business with me.—
Wiley Jones, in Agricultural Adver-
at Tax STAR office. tf
