The dapper young salesman entered
an editor’s sanctum, a few days ago,
carrying in his hand a fine polished oak
cabinet. “I want to interest you in a
talking machine,” said the salesman.

kind?” was asked. “The best kind,”

you get it?” “Married it,” and there
was no room for further argument.

Colonel John Hawn came to town
yesterday and reports that he caught
about 200 trout in all, this season, in
the head waters of White’s Creek. He
says his best catch was 39 in one .day,
and none of them under 10 inches in
length. For that buueh a city chap
offerad him $5.00, but John refused to
take it, as all his fishing, this spring,
has been done for the benefit of the
sick. John is not only a good fisher-
man, but also the pos-essor of a great,

Some of our delinquents have been
responding nobly to statement< re-
cently sent to them, some paying in
full, others only in part, yet doing the
best they could, and that’s all we ask
of any person. We thank you, one and
all, gentlemen, you who have been
favoring us with cash, and we feel sure
that we have but very few dishonest
people among our large number of
readers. “An honest man is the
noblest work of God,” and no man can
afford to be dishonest.
A newspaper whose columns overflow
with advertisements of business men
has more influence in attracting atten-
tion to build up a town than any other
agency that can be employed. People
go where there is business. Capital
and labor go vhere there is an enter-
prising community. No power on earth
is so strong to build up a town so well
as a paper well patronized, and its
power should be well appreciated.
The man who overlooks his town paper
injures himself by injuring his town
and townsmen.— Wanamaker.
The tar that is contained in Bee’s
Laxative Honey and Tar is harmless.
It is not coal tar, but is obtained from
the pine trees of our own native forests.
Bee’s Laxative Honey and Tar is the
best remedy for colds because it acts
on the bowels—thus expelling all colds
from the system. Bee’s is the original
Laxative Honey and Tar, and is best
for coughs,colds, croup, whooping
cough, lung and bronchial affections.

A sensible young lady of Kansas
made the following request of her
friend: Do not lay me down by the
rippling brookside, lest the babbling
lovers wake me from my dreams, nor
in the beautiful cemeteries in the val-
leys, lest sightseers cooing over epi-
taphs distract me; but let me sleep un-
der the counter of the merchant and
business man who never advertises.
There is the peace that passeth all un-
derstanding, and deep is the sleep in
which neither the buoyant footfall of
youth nor the weary shuffle of old age
will ever intrude.
Mr. Amos Knepper, who is a candi-
date for Assembly, subject to the de-
cision of the Bepublican primary elec-
tion to be held on May 26th, was in
town a short time today. Mr. Knepper
is a good, clean citizen, a good business
man, and a most loyal and active Re-
publican. He has been twice defeated
for nomination. but each time made a
remarkably good run, notwithstanding
the fact that he was not backed by the
leaders of either of the two powerful
factions of his party. This time, how-
ever, there seems to be a general lining
up for Knepper, and it is but right and
proper.
A dose of Pine-ules at bed time will
usually relieve backache, before morn-
ing. These beautiful little globules are
soft gelatine coated, and when moisten-
ed and placed in the mouth you can’t
keep from swallowing them. Pine-ules
contain neither sugar nor alcohol—just
gums and resins obtained from our own
native pine forests, combined with
other well known bladder, kidney,
blood and backache remedies. Sold by
Elk Lick Pharmacy. 6-1
There is a good joke being told con-
cerning a certain DuBois business mane
He purchased a jar of goldfish the
other day, and when he took them
home at noon he placed them on the
table, remarking to the hired girl that
“there was something good for supper.”
He did not suppose that she would go
ahead and cook them, but one can’t
always tell what a hired girl will do
when it comes to obeying instructions,
for when the aforesaid young man and
his wife sat down to supper, one of the
dishes brought in was the goldfish,
nicely fried and looking very appetiz-
ing.—DuBois Courier.

New Railroad.
J. Monroe Turner, right-of-way chief
of the Wabash interests, here yester-
day, said the Wabash coming is a sure
thing; that nothing—not even the B.
and O., is in its way. ~
A prominent citizen later brought
news that the B. & O. is also sure;
moreover, “the B. & O. will come up to
Frostburg level, in which event,” he
continued, “I am preferably a B. & O.
man.”—Frostburg Journal.
New Livery.
Walter Williams returned from Pitts-
burg several days ago with three very
fine livery horses. Walter is embark-
ing in the livery business at J. R. Joy's
barn, and there is no doubt of his get-
ting his share of the public patronage,
as he is a splendid horseman and a
most genial and accommodating fellow:
Walter says it is his aim to keep only
first class horses and rigs, and his
charges will be fair to all concerned.

DON'T TIE YOURSELF UP.
Don’t tie a cough or a cold up in your
system by taking a remedy that binds
the bowels. Take Kennedy’s Laxative
Honey and Tar. It is different from
all other cough syrups. It is better.
It opens the bowels—expels all cold
from the system, relieves coughs, colds,
croup, whooping cough, etc. An ideal
remedy for young and old. Children
like it. Sold by E. H. Miller. 5-1
A Delightful Affair.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles gave
a delightful “smoker” at the Eagles’
Home, in Meyersdale, Thursday even-
ing last.
THE STAR man was honored with an
invitation to attend, but could not be
present. However, we are none the
less thankful, although we regret our
inability to attend.
A fine time is reported, and we hear
much praise of the refreshments, music,
general excellence of the entire pro-
gram, and the extreme courtesy and
splendid hospitality shown to all the
guests.
Celebrated His 56th Birthday |
Anniversary.
On Wednesday evening of last week,
Mr. Chauncey Bowman, a prominent
citizen of Boynton, Pa., celebrated the
58th anniversary of his birth. The
guests constituted a jolly crowd, and
they were splendidly entertained.
Nothing was lacking to make the
evening a happy one for all present,
and the supper was such as our Somer-
set county women are noted for—
simply superb. Music was furnished
by W. H. Bowman's Combination
Orchestra, and all the guests departed
feeling that they had a most excellent
time, and wishing Mr. Bowman many
additional happy years.

Wants Sugar of Elijah Livengood’s
Make, and is Willing to Trust
an Editor with His Money.
Our friend Hanson Brown, formerly
of Garrett county, Md. but now of | $Y
Fayette county, Pa., writes to THE | &9
Star as follows:
Mgr. Eprror:—I enclose $18.00. from
which take $2.00 for my last year’s sub-
scription, and send me ten gallons of
maple syrup, and the balance in maple | 4
sugar of Elijah Livengood’s make. A
great many people here don’t know
what maple sugar is.
From your friend,
Hanson BROWN.
Hanson Brown is every inch a gentle-
man and an honest man, or he wouldn’t
put so much confidence in a country
editor.
$18.00 in a country editor’s hands all at
once, for editors seldom have that much
possess more than 50 cents at a time,
they are usually arrested on suspicion
of having stolen it. But, it we escape
arrest, we shall not betray Mr. Brown’s
confidence, as we feel too highly
honored, and besides, the two big dol-
lars on subscription make us feel rich
enough, and they were just the proper
inducement to keep us from striking out
for Canada. We’ll just flourish the
other money around a little to make
other people feel envious, and then
we’ll buy the maple sweets as directed.
Anyway, we want the people of old |
“Fiat” to sample the sweetness of old
Somerset county, and our friend Brown
knows just how well they will relish it.
We thank you very much, Mr. Brown,
and will say further, that if you were
like some subscribers on our list, you
would have asked us to carry your ac-
count another year or two, and then
struck us for a loan to buy the sugar
and!syrup with. You are all right, old
man, and may your tribe increase.
