A North Missouri school girl was re- quired to write an essay of 250 words about an automobile. She submitted the following: My uncle bought an automobile. He was riding out in the country when it busted going up a long hill. I guess this is about fifty words. The other 200 are what my uncle said while he was walking back to town, but are not fit for publication. WANTED! 10 men in each state to travel, post signs, advertise and leave samples of our goods. For about 50 successive years he was postmaster at. Summit Mills, which was one of the first offices established in Somerset county. He is survived by several sons and daugh- ters, among them Norman E. Miller, of Meyersdale ; Urias M. Miller, of Madi- son, O.; Mrs. W. D. Saylor and Miss Lizzie Miller, at home. He was an uncle of Judge J.J. Miller, of Pitts- burg. It is not difficult to relieve blind, bleeding, itching or protruding piles with ManZan, the great vile remedy. Sold by Elk Lick Phar- macy. 6-1: Newton Milliron, whose father was pastor of the United Evangelical chureh, of this place, six or seven years ago, was here last week visiting friends. Newton was quite a small boy then, but is now a full grown man, and holds a good position in the Claims depart- ment of the Pennsylvania railroad. Good positions are always waiting for young men who have not idled away the days of their youth, but who were wise enough to study and educate themselves. The best safeguard against headache, constipation and liver troubles is De- Witt’s Little Early Risers. Keep a vial of these famous little pills in the house and take a dose at bed time when-you feel that the stomach and bowels need cleansing. They don’t gripe. Sold by E. H. Miller. 4-1 The boy who saves his money be- comes the banker, the merchant, the professional man. The boy who never saves a cent makes the man who “earns his bread by the sweat of his brow, who never owns a home or enjoys the luxuries of life. He always has a kick coming, and never lets a chance to kick go by. Everything goes wrong with him—when he is a man. Parents should use every possible means to make graduates in economy of the boys and girls.—Ex. The gums and resins obtained from pine trees have long been recognized as highly beneficial in the treatment of backache, kidney and bladder troubles. Pine-ules is the name of a new med- icine, the principle ingredients of which come from the pine forests of our own native land. Sold by Elk Lick Phar- macy. 6-1 A woman in San Francisco was gath- éring statistics for a temperance society publication. Talking one day to a drayman, a big, heavy and red-faced individual, she asked: ‘Well, now, my man, tell me how many glasses of beer you drink during the course of a day?” The man took kis hat off, and scratched his head. “Well, mum,” he replied, “I don’t know as ’ow I can rightly tell you. Some days I ’as about thirty, but,” brightening up, “on the other ’and, some days I ’as quite a lot.” An excited Londoner met a friend outside a public house in Whitechapel. “These men in here,” he exclaimed furiously, pointing behind him, “have insulted me. Now, just watch me go in and kick them all into the street, one after another. You can count ’em off as they come through the door.” The friend stood and watched. Pres- ently a human form whizzed by him and fell with » cruel smack in the gut- ter. “One!” he called. “Stop count- ing, you fool!” cried the other, as he rose in anguish. It’s me!” A liquid cold cure for children that is pleasant. harmless, and effective is Bee’s Laxative Honey and Tar. Super- ior to all other cough syrups or cold remedies because it acts on the bowels. Ap ideal remedy for Coughs, Colds, Croup, Whooping Cough and all curable lung and bronchial affections in child or adult. Pleasant to take. Sold by Elk Lick Pharmacy. 6-1 Last week we received a handsomely printed and embellished invitation from the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania Club, requesting our presence at the Club House, Washing- ton, D. C., Wednesday evening, March 14th, 1906, to meet Hon. Samuel W. Pennypacker, Governor of Pennsyl- vania. No doubt the Governor and all the other “big guns” present on the oc- casion missed THE STAR man very much, but we couldn’t go to Washing- ton without missing prayer meeting at ‘home, and that settled it. We trust that the Governor and all our other intimate friends and associates who assembled there will excuse us. G. W. Slick, ex-Surgeon General of Thoburn Post, G. A. R., arrived in town, mounted, Tuesday. He was not expected, hence popular confusion and want of preparation. However, he put up his horse at a barber-shop and went to a down-town livery to get shaved. Next he applied at a restaurant for a drink, expecting to enjoy luncheon later at a bar, but failing in all his first attempts, he announced that he was “next to head” in a cavavansary at Salisbury, Pa, and Frostburgers com- ing there hungry and thirsty, could be relieved of either or both deprivations at 50 and 10 cents per. Considering his long absence, the doctor was look- ing in stato quo post bellum. —Frostburg Mining Journal. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Smith, who spent the winter at Esbon, Kan., where Mr. Smith was employed in the store of Robt. 8. Beachy & Co., returned to the East this week. They will again take up their residence here, Mr.Smith hav- ing been engaged to manage a new store that the Meagers will have in operation in the M. J. Glotfelty build- ing, on Ord street, by April 1st. He is here now making the preliminary ar- rangements, but Mrs. Smith stopped off at Connellsville to accompany her daughter, Mrs. 8S. P. Schell, to a sanita- rium at White Haven, Pa. to be treat- ed for lung trouble. We regret to say that Mrs. Schell is in very poor health, and her trouble is believed to be tu- berculosis. We hope, however, that she will be restored to health. The tar that is contained in Bee's Laxative Houey and Tar is harmless. It is not coal tar, but is obtained from the pine trees of our own native forests. Bee’s Laxative Honey and Tar is the best remedy for colds because it acts on the bowels—thus expelling all colds from the system. Bee's is the original Laxative Honey and Tar, and is best for coughs, colds, croup, whooping cough, lung and bronchial affections. Sold by Elk Lick Pharmacy. 6-1 The Sally Livengood property.corner Ord street and Smith avenue, has been sold to one of the Lichliters for $1100. The location is a very desirable one, and the price paid is considerably be- low its actual value. The former owner made the same blunder that many another property owner has made— selling without publicly advertising the property. We know of one desir- able property that was sold in this town a few years ago for just $500 less than several people we knew of would have been only too anxious to pay for it, but they didn’t know it was for sale, as the property never was advertised. Many times a few dollars spent for an advertisement in Tug Star has brought the advertiser many times the amount expended. We congratulate the purch- aser of the Livengood property on hav- ing secured an enormous bargain. A dose of Pine-ules at bed time will usually relieve backache, before morn- ing. These beautiful little globules are soft gelatine coated. and when moisten- ed and placed in the mouth you can’t keep from swallowing them. Pineeules contain neither sugar nor alcohol—just gums and resins obtained from our own native pine forests, combined with other well known bladder, kidney, blood and backache remedies. Sold by Elk Lick Pharmacy. 6-1 Harry Faglane, employed at the National Transit company machine shop, received an unique valentine on Wednesday in the shape of three $10 bank notes. Bert Funk, William Frig- gel and Farlane all work in the shops and are chums. On Tuesday night Funk dropped into the cigar store, which Friggel conducts as a side issue, and n-ked him to put a nerve-harrow- ing valentine into an envelope and mail it to Farlane. Friggel had three $10 bank notes in a blank envelope in a drawer in the desk at the store, and ac- cidentally put a stamp on this envelope and addressed it to Farlane, leaving the envelope, with the valentine en- closed, in the desk. Farlane’s mail is delivered at the shops’ office, and at noon Friggel, Funk and half a dozen others in the secret followed Farlane to the office, expecting to ‘‘give him the laugh” when he opened the valentine. When the money was uncovered, Frig- gel realized he had mixed matters, and laid claim to the cash, but Farlane has demanded that-he prove ownership to the property. —Pitisburg Times. Stricken With Paralysis. We regret very much to announce that Henry Kidner, one of Salisbury’s well-known citizens, was stricken with paralysis, last week, at the home of his brother-in-law, the late Henry Keister, who died at his home near Somerset, on the 9th inst. Mr. Kidner went to the Keister home to attend the funeral, and while there was stricken with the disease aforesaid, rendering him help- less in his right arm, and his entire right side was also affected. At last re- port, however, he was improving, and the attending physician is hopeful of his recovery. 3 DOCTORS ARE PUZZLED. The remarkable recovery of Kenneth Melver, of Vanceboro, Me., is the sub- ject of much interest to the medical fraternity and a wide circle of friends. He says of his case: “Owing to severe inflammation of the Throat and con- gestion of the Lungs, three doctors gave me up to die, when, as a last resort, I was induced to try Dr. King’s New Dis- covery and I am happy to say, it saved my life.” Cures the worst Coughs and Colds, Bronchitis, Tonsilitis, Weak Lungs, Hoarseness and LaGrippe. Guaranteed at E. H. Miller's drug store. 50c. and $1.00. Trial bottle free. 4-1 Manslaughter. The trial of Eilward Walsh for kill- ing John P. Moody, both of this place. in progress when this paper went to press last week, terminated Friday evening in a verdict of manslaughter. This result was a great disappoint- ment to him and his friends, all having expected acquittal. Sentence not yet pronounced.—Frost- burg Mining Journal. A SCIENTIFIC WONDER. The cures that stand to its credit make Bucklen’s Arnica Salve a scien- tific wonder. It cured E. R. Mulford, lecturer for the Patrons of Husbandry, Waynesboro, Pa, of a distressing case of Piles. It heals the worst Burns, Sores, Boils, Ulcers, Cuts, Wounds, Chilblains and Salt Rheum. Only 25c. at E. H. Miller’s drug store. 4-1 Fire in Meyersdale.’ At an early hour last Sunday morn- ing, fire broke out in Beveridge’s res- taurant, burning it to the ground. Newton’s grocery store, adjoining the restaurant, shared the same fate. The flames also spread to the Donges block before the fire could be extinguished, damaging that structure to the extent of about $700. The total loss is about $3,000. Just how the fire originated is not known. GET THE RIGHT KIND. If you are troubled with Piles and can’t find a cure, try Witch Hazel Salve, but be sure you get that made by E. C. DeWitt & Co., Chicago. It is the Orig- inal. If you have used Witch Hazel Salve without being relieved it is prob- able that you got hold of one of the many worthless counterfeits that are sold on the reputation of the genuine DeWitt’s Witch Hazel Salve. Sold by E. H. Miller. 4-1 The Coming Raliroan. Reports of tunnels projected on the Wabash extension between Cumber- land and Frostburg conflict so radically with surface inequalities that the Jour- nal will not reproduce them. It is probably enough to say the road is coming, and that work on grade hereabout will be going on within the year. Meanwhile, there is a detachment of B. & O. surveyors working between Frostburg and Mt. Savage, with what purpose no one hereabout knows.— Frostburg Mining Journal. DON’T GET THE HABIT. Indigestion is much of a habit. Don’t get the habit. Take a little. Kodol Dyspepsia Cure after eating and you will quit belching, puffing, palpitating and frowning. Kodol Digests what you eat and makes the stomach sweet. Ko- dolis a thorough digestant and will afford relief from any disorder due to imperfect digestion or mal-assimilation of food. Sold by E. H. Miller. 4-1 Register of Wills Cook After the Preachers. Register of Wills, Charles F. Cook, will soon declare war against ministers and justices of Somerset county, unless they are more prompt in sending him duplicate certificates after performing a marriage ceremony. Too much in- difference is shown at this time, since many are the ministers and justices who have performed marriage cere- monies and have never even as much as thought of advising the register of wills to that effect. As a consequence the records do not prove that the par- ties in question ever crossed the matri- monial threshold, but only the fact that a marriage license was issued. The register is powerless to remedy the evil, unless he gets after ministers and justices. Very often he is at a loss to show who the officiating clergyman or magistrate is, and there’s the trouble. Since his advent into office, January 1, there are 16 duplicate cer- tificates unheard from. His predeces- sor, Charles C. Shafer, has over 100 yet to be heard from, says the Berlin Recrod. War Veterans of 1812. Two companies were enlisted and went from Berlin and vicinity. An in- fantry company—Captain, Peter Lane; 1st Lieutenant, Wm. Atchison; 2d Lieutenant, Michael Keefer; 1st Ser- geant, John C. Walker; fifer, Jacob Hoyl; drummer, George N. Coleman. Riflecompany—Captain,Casper Keller; 1st Lieutenant, John P. Brubaker; 2d Lieutenant, John Crofford; 1st Ser- geant, Michael Dively ; bugler, Conrad Antillus ; other known members being Daniel Bowman, Henry J. Young, Wm. Knepper, James Ferrell and Peter Rhoads. These are all the names known to the historian, company rolls seemingly being lost in Harrisburg. Persons knowing of any other members of these companies will please make them known to Jae. J. Zorn, Berlin, Pa. for use of Wm. H. Weffley and Hon. Wm. H. Koontz, historians of Somerset county, who will appreciate the favor. A LIVELY TUSSLE with that old enemy of the race, Con- stipation, often ends in Appendicitis.
