Most men are at one time or an- other. Her love is a matter of imagin- ation; mine is practical. She would never wash, cook, and slave for a poor workingman and his children, but he doesn’t know it. Let him alone; he’ll wake up.” Mrs. Hubbell’s head was level. For years the editor and family had the honor of having the largest Christ- mas turkey in town, each year having their table graced on Christmas by a bird varying in weight from 18 to 28 pounds, dressed. This year, however, we had to yield the big turkey cham- pionship to W. H. Boucher and family, who had a turkey for their Christmas dinner that tipped the beam at 31 pounds when ready for the oven. Geo. Boucher sent the big bird down from Friendsville, Md., and then missed the train and failed to arrive in Salisbury in time to help the balance of the family do justice to the fowl at dinner time. It just served him right, for he had no business to swipe the editor’s big turkey championship away without giving notice that the honor was to be contested. He arrived at the old home in time for supper, however, and found plenty of turkey still on hand. His brother John was also at home on Christmas. Mr. Frank Johns, of Chambersburg, Pa., arrived in town last Saturday evening for a visit with his brother Scott and family. While he and Scott were driving up from Meyersdale on the evening of his arrival, they were given a bad scare at the Moser cut, by a passing train. The horse pulled to the side of the road, overturning the buggy and spilling out the occupants. Luckily, however, they were not in- jured, but the buggy was considerably damaged. Had the horse been a very hard one to manage, both of the men would likely have been killed or badly injured. Frank told the editor that it was as bad a seare as he ever had in his life, and he has been in many peril- ous places in his time, having served his country several years in the War of the Rebellion, and participated in many of its bloodiest battles. He is at present deeply mourning the death of his loved and esteemed wife, who died very suddenly, several weeks ‘ago. This will be sad pews to the many friends Mrs. Johns had here in Salis- bury, and THE STAR joins in “extending sympathy to the bereaved husband. Wedding Bells. Mr. Daniel Livengood, the genial and popular manager of the West Salisbury Feed Company's store, was quietly married to a Miss Miller, in Meyers- dale, Tuesday last, and from thence went to Washington and other eastern points with his fair bride. We can give no particulars of the wedding, any more than to state that the bride is reported to be a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Miller, who resided near Meyersdale some years ago, but now deeeased. The bride and groom became ac- quainted, we are told. while attending Juniata College, at Huntingdon, Pa, several years ago. They are . both very popular, and, to the best of our knowledge, both graduates of Juniata College. The groom is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Livengood. He is a young man of rare business ability, and decidedly one of the finest all- around young men we ever knew. Trae Star extends its most hearty con- gratulations and best wishes. The desire to turn over a new leaf at the commencement of a new year is not something to be ridiculed. Few people are satisfied with the life they have led, and very few ought to be. If you have lived jifor your own en- joyment, and have sought it ingidleness, you surely have met with disappoint- ment, and when the New Year comes upon you like the striking of a great clock, is it oot a good time for the re- solve that you will seek higher happi- ness in a life more industrious, pur- poseful, and worthy of yourself? If you have been so taken up with the pursuits of business or ambition that you have neglected self improve- ment, and let your home affections grow dull, and forgotten the needs of the community about you, it is well to call a halt and give the better part of yourself a chance. If you sorrowfully feel that you have lost the simple trust of earlier days, if faith, hope and love have grown dim amid the dust and smoke of life’s tur- moil, it surely will be well for you to get out of the turmoil for alittle while, to seek some quiet sanctuary, it may be with those who assemble themselves together for God’s worship, it may be with the loved ones of your home, or it may be in the stillness of your own spirit, to brighten up those best pos- sessions of your soul and to bind your- self by new ties to the immortal life. The child that grows up in a progres- sive, happy home, is very apt to raise children in a progressive, happy home. Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and mistakes have been made. Tomorrow will be a new day; begin it well. It is too dear with its hopes to waste a moment on yesterday. Children, look in those eyes, listen to that dear voice, notice the feeling of even a single touch that is bestowed upon you by that gentle hand; make much of it while you have that most precious of all gifts, a loving mother. Fathers, live more with your boys. Your intentions are good, but it is said that the lower regions are paved with good intentions, and you only get cred- it for what you do. A girl is never safer than when with her mother, but when your boy reaches a certain age, what he amounts to is largely .up to you. And the boys who are making the streets of our town a synonym for depravity, are the result of parent- al neglect and evasion of plain duty on the part of the father.
