Next door to
Postoffice,
Mr. W. 8S. Lichty, eldest son of Mr,
and Mrs. Samuel J. Lichty, arrived
here on Christmas evening to remain
for an indefinite period. Wm. 8. emi-
grated to Nebraska about 27 years ago,
and thie is his first visit to his native
heath since his departure. At present
he resides in or near Lincoln, the state
capital, but makes frequent trips to
Canada, being an agent for a Canadian
land company, as we understand it,
and a promoter of Canadian coloniza-
tion. He represents a good scheme,
and many former Somerset county
farmers, and others throughout the
western states, are pouring into Can-
ada at a rapid rate. Wm. 8. Lichty has
always had a host of friends here, and
it’s the same wherever he has resided.
He is a generous, open-handed, free-
hearted man, and all his old acquaint-
ances here are delighted to extend to
him a hearty welcome after his long
absence. He is looking exceedingly
well and hearty, and we know he is en-
joying his visit. He was one of the
editor's friends in Carleton, Neb., and
our latchstring is always out for
“Billy.”
The Christmas trade in Salisbury
was immense, this year, far greater
than that of any other year in the
town’s history. Naturally our mer-
chants are well pleased, but some of
them complain that while the rush was
on, Saturday evening, shoplifters got in
their work to a most shameful degree.
Especially was this the case ut Hay’s
department store, over which hustling
C.T. Hay presides as manager. While
Mr. Hay and his foree of nine clerks |
were busy waiting upon the army of
customers on both the first and second
floors, they could not wateh thieves
very closely, and the latter took ad-
vantage of the situation by stealing al-
most by wholesale. Some of the nim-
ble-fingered ones were men, some wom-
en, and some children. Some of them
are known, too, and it may be that they
will be called upon to make satisfac-
tion. Be thatas it may, however, it
will nevertheless be well for the shop-
lifters to let up on their raseally and
contemptible business. Arrangements
are being made to lay traps and have
ways.
