Simon Maust and son, of Elk Lick
township, recently purchased a one-
year-old Percheron stallion, from
Luther Dull. of New Centerville, that
weighed 1040 pounds on the day he
was a year old. Who can beat that for
a yearling colt?
Our talented young friend James
May, of Boynton, failed to “get thar” at
the Elk Lick township school letting,
last Friday. We wonder why, we
wonder why. Perhaps that Somerset
notary public could explain “what is

Our fellow townsman Stewart Smith

man, and it goes without saying that
he will be very popular with the pa-

We notice-that a large number of
untagged dogs are still roaming at will
about town, notwithstanding that the
dog ordinance went into effect on tke
15th inst. The dog catcher should be
promptly put to work at impounding
dogs, and after due notice is given to
the owners to comply with the law, the
officer should at once tag with bullets
all dogs whose owners fail to pay their
dog license. Anyway, to make the
best of it, lead tags are the best, and
about the only good dogs in this vicin-
ity are the dead ones.

We regret to announce that Mr.
John Menger was taken very sick a
few days ago. He has been quite un-
well for a year or more, was operated
on in vain by an expert surgeon, some
time ago, and has since been back and
forth to the Muarkleton Saunitorium for
treatment. Sometimes he seems to be
making splendid progress toward re-

informed her that the relief he gave
her would prove to be only of a tem-

ing bravely. She has the sympathy
and prayers of her many friends.
During the meat famine it is stated
that people in the west turned to a
fresh-water fish called carp. Carp,
quite a common fish, does not seem to
be very palatable. This is what one
western paper says: Clean the fish
nicely and let it dry two days in the
sun. Nail the fish to a pine board and
cover it thoroughly with salt. Let it
stand for two days longer, and then put
in an oven and bake slowly for six
hours. Then remove the nails, take
carp from the board and throw it
away, eating the nails and the board,
which is said to be the best part of the
fish.
Some time ago the company that
manufactures Marvel flour offered 25
barrels of their product to the 25 per-
sons giving the best reasons why fam-
ilies should use Marvel flour, and why
merchants should handle it. Miss
Cora Keim, of this place, was one of
the lucky contestants, and the Dall
Mercantile Company, the exclusive
agents for the sale of Marvel flour in
Salisbury, delivered a barrel of the
same to her home. The contest was
advertised in the Ladies’ Home Jour-
nal, and came to a close on July Ist.
We congratulate Miss Keim on her suc-
cess in the contest, also upon the fact
that she knows just how to bake all
manner of good things out of the flour,
which is a first class article, as Tne
Star family, also, can testify to,having
used a good many sacks of it.
Ix-Representative James Hamilton
Lewis, who was recently made Corpor-

of the late General Fitzhugh Lee. “It
was when he was a candidate for Gov-

following the election, which left the
count in uncertainty. He came down
by the way of the University of Vir-
ginia and ran amuck of our old janitor.
