Schell Hardware Company’s Build- ing at Somerset Set Fire. Somerset, June 30.—Residents of the central part of town were awakened Thursday morning by a terrific explo- sion in the cellar of the Schell Hard- ware Company’s store. one of the company’s employes, was filling a five-gallon can with graphite, when the paint exploded. All Pyle re- members is that he saw a flash across his can and he was carried up an ele- vator shaft to the first floor. There was a considerable quantity of dynamite in the cellar and it’s remark able that this explosive did not let go. Russell Pullin was also in the cellak. The Somerset Coal Company’s offices are located on the second floor and a number of their clerks and engineers had narrow escapes. The Farmers’ National Bank is located in the same block. and for some time it was feared that the entire building would be de: stroyed, as the firemen were unable to reach the blaze on account of the smoke and the crowded condition of the cel« lar. lip, THE ONLY WAY TO CURE. He had just stepped into his $4,000 automobile when it started to run off, and, after having acquired a speed of seventy miles an hour, was making straight for a telegraph pole. Fortunately, just at this point a bed slat broke and the Here and There Man woke up. This is probably slander, but they tell it on a doctor in a town as good many miles away from Johnstown. They say he bought an automobile so he could scare horses and hurt people and make business for himsclf. A Johnstown girl who graduated had for her essay the subject, “Reaching for the High Places.” In order to carry out the “motif,” her mother a few days ago gave her the ceilings to look after in the housecleaning stunt, but she wouldn't do it. At the public sale of the shoe factory, Wednesday afternoon, the property was knocked off to P. T. Miller for the sum of $3000, who, we understand, was acting for himself snd some of the others who had ownership interest in the concern. The Record is informed that the new owners contemplate con- tinuing the factory in operation, a purpose much to be wished for, as the number of people to which the eoncern gives employment makes it a good thing for the town. The factory be- came involved during the first several months of operation, through the diffi- culties attending the getting the new venture in successful running order. During the last three months it showed a good working profit, —Recerd. It’s Different Up this Way. Last week Leon Rice, out near Centenary, saw some one in the house with a light and he concluded he would show the intruder whose house he was prowling around in looking for money and things, so he called out seven big stout pipe line workers, loaded his shot- gun heavy, and they marched abreast boldly from the barn to the house, shaking in their boots, thinking of the funeral that would soon take place. But when they got close it was all moonshine, and all their bravery van- ished. Now all you have to say to Leon is “moonshine,” and he says “Dog- gone you, hush and don’t tell the Nudger.”—Cumberland Courier. It’s different up this way when any- body says “moonshine.” Whenever that word is uttered here in Somerset county, Pa., nearly everybody says: “Certainly, bring me a gallon or two of ity A SMOOTH ARTICLE.
