Whoever dumped that lot of potatoes out on Walnut street, just a little southwest of George Schramm’s house, ought to be arrested, fined and requir- ed to remove them. Nothing smells worse than rotten potatoes, and the streets should not be used as dumping grounds for sueh material. Miss Jenet O. McKinley has been elected principal of the Salisbury schools. She is a most excellent teach- er, a graduate of the Cslifornia- State Normal school, and has the best wishes of a host of friends in the work before her. Women should be careful about these things. : Itin a kind of bilious food, You wish an aid to digest food, No other pill is half so good, As DeWitt’s Little Early Risers. Miller. 7-1 A.F. John, the coal operator, two weeks ago closed out the last of his eosl holdings in Somerset county re- maining after his sale last fall, the Quemahoning Valley Mining Company taking the property for a nice sum. Mr. John says he has not determined just what he will do. One or two local people have made him an offer for his fine Main-street home, and the owner’s answer is that he will sell any property he has provided he gets his price. As for moving away to Philadelphia or any other city, Mr. John says that for the present, at least, Johnstown is good enough” for him.—Johnstown Tribune. A reliable man from Greenville town- ship stated in the postoffice, some days ago, that the supposed victim of small- pox that was recently sent to that fully recovered, that the eruption had all disappeared and left neither scales nor scabs. He got the information di- rect from the victim’s father, he said, and that ought to be good authority. One can readily imagine about how much smallpox there was about the case, and it is more than probable the whole thing was another cry of “wolf” when there was no “wolf.” The fam- ilies under quarantine have all been released, and we suppose the borough will be called upon to pay a needless bill. The July “Arena” which opens the thirty-fourth volume of this magazine is one of the strongest and most thought-compelling numbers of this well-known review that has ever ap- peared. Perhaps the most important feature is the opening contribution in a series of papers on “The Economic Struggle in Colorado,”'by the eminent legal authority, the Hon. J. Warner Mills. Unlike most legal writers, Mr. Mills possesses'a fascinating style, and unlike most present-day discussions of evil conditions, these papers are far more than mere historical recitals of ‘facts. With the broad grasp of a true philosophical statesman he has laid hold of the subject, and shows the root-causzes that have produced the re- actionary, unrepublican and dangerous social and political conditions which are fast assuming such colossal pro- portions throughout the Republic. No one interested in our great nation should fail to read | these papers. Big Pay by Southern Pipe Line Company. The pipe line now being laid through this locality by the Southern Pipe Line Company has given employment to many men. On Monday and Tuesday the company paid over 500 men, at the Valley house, in this borough, and the money paid out footed up to over $17, 000. This is the fourth line the com- pany has laid through this vicinity, and each time it has put much money in circulation here. A SURPRISE PARTY. A pleasant surprise party may be given to your stomach and liver, by taking a medicine which will relieve their pain and discomfort, viz: Dr. King’s New Life Pills. They are a most wonderful remedy, affording sure relief and cure, for headache, dizziness and constipation. 25c. at E. H. Miller’s drug store. 8-1 Bad Man Captured. On Monday afternoon Chief of Police M. D. Thomas made a valuable capture when he “nabbed” the notorious* Jake” Lowery who was wanted on the allega- tion of having had a hand in the brutal beating administered to Mr. Engle, a working miner residing north of Huntsrick hill, onthe Meyersdale road. The beating took place last winter while Engle was on his way from work and was attacked by several striking miners. “Jake” Lowery is said to have had a hand in the beating, and as he was a fugitive from justice, Officer Thomas arrested him on sight and locked him up until the Meyersdale authorities sent Constable Swindell here to escort the captive to Meyers- dale. We understand that Lowery has given bail for his appearance at court. It is said that a reward had been of- fered for the arrest of Lowery, and if that is the case, Officer Thomas is clearly entitled to it. Lowery had been working on the pipe line, and was captured when he came to town, Mon- day, for his pay. WEDDING Invitations at THE STAR office.
