Bitten by a Copperhead.
Samuel Beltz, an aged citizen of this
place, accompained by his wife, Monday
morning left for the top of Wills Moun-
tain for the purpose of picking huckle-
berries. While Mr. Beltz was picking
berries close to & rock,he was bitten on
the index finger of his right hand by a
large copperhead snake, which was con-
cealed underneath the rock. His hand
and arm immediately began swelling
from the effects of the deadly posion,
and it was with difficulty that he reach-
ed home. where a local physician was
summoned. Mrs. Beltz was overcome
from the smell of the poison, and be-
came very sick while accompanying
her husband home. The injured man
is still in a precarious condition, but
hopes are entertained for his recovery.
Mr. Beltz, after having been bitten,
killed the snake by cutting off its head
with a penkinfe, and applied a piece of
the snake’s flesh, thus counteracting
some of the poison in his system. He
is resting as easy as can be expected at
