Several Interesting Cases of Re- vivisecence Among Noted People. Astonishing as it may appear, it is nevertheless true, that more than one celebrity was actually born after the burial of his own mother, as the fol- lowing authentic incidents will show. One of the most wonderful instances of reviviscence occurred to the mother of Sir Richard Edgcumbe, knight, who was created Baron of Mount Edgcumbe in 1748. The family were living at Cut- teel, when Lady Edgcumbe, after a short illness, was believed to have ex- pired, and was laid in the family vault about a week after her supposed death. Soon after the interment the sexton, from motives sufficiently obvious, went down into the vault and tried to take off a gold ring from her ladyship’s fin- ger. Not succeeding, however, he press- ed and pinched the finger, when the body moved in the coffin. The sexton fled in terror, leaving the lantern be- hind him. Lady Edgcumbe arose and, taking the lantern, walked to the Man- or House. About five years afterwards Sir Richard was born. \ Many people are not aware that Gen- eral Lee, the leader of the southern forces during the American war, was born after his mother had been buried. The poor lady suffered from ecatalepsy, and during a prolonged trance one of her physicians pronounced her to be dead. Fortunately, the sexton heard loud crying and knocking as he was engaged in his sad task, and soon re- leased the poor woman from her awful fate. A year later, General Lee, her mMyoungest son, was born. Several years ago a noted peeress was pronounced to be dead by one of her physicians. When the undertakers ar- rived the broken-hearted husband re- quested them to leave the room, as he wished to be alone with his beloved wife. As he imprinted a final kiss on her cold cheek a tear fell on her face, and the husband, feeling confident that some slight movement had tdken place, sent immediately for the physician, who detected a sign of life. Later on, when sufficiently recovered, the peeress told her husband it was his tear that saved her from being buried alive, She was conscious of everything, but, although she knew that the men had come to place her in her coffin, could not move. When the tear fell on her face she made an almost super- human effort to move—hence the slight tremor. This peeress lived for many years, and her son, born two years later, is a well known member of Lon- don society. Ebenezer Erskine, one of the found- ers of the United Free Church of Scot- land, was born after the burial of his mother. Like General Lee’s mother, Mrs. Erskine was buried whilst in a trance, with a valuable ring on one of her fingers. When night came, the grave-digger stole stealthily to the newly made grave, and finding it difii- cult to remove the ring, began to cut off the finger to obtain his object. Mrs. Erskine awoke with a loud shriek, and returning to her home walked up stairs without meeting one of her family. But her husband was heard to say: “If I didna’ ken my wife was lying in the kirkyard I wad say that wis her fitstep.” Mrs. Erskine lived to become the mother of Ebenezer, one of the greatest pulpit orators Scotland ever produced.— Pennsylvania Hawkeye Vacation Days.
