The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and
the Civil War. 1861-1865.
It was the first and most desirable
point of vantage coveted by both the
Federal and Confederate armies. In
May, 1861, the four Federal advance
columns concentrated at Parkersburg,
W. Va., Wheeling, W. Va., Harpers
Ferry, W. Va., and at Washington. To
retain the advantage, the Federal gov-
- ernment established block houses along
the railroad from the Monocacy to the
' Ohio river, besides forts at Winchester,
Harper's Ferry, Cumberland, Piedmont
and New Creek (Keyser). The B. & O.
was the base of operations for the Fed-
eral army for nearly four years and
from which the government could not
take advance line earlier than Novem-
ber, 1864. The B. & O. was the means
of communication between the West
and the Army of the Potomac, and was
consequently in a continual state of
seige. Harpers Ferry, the key to the
Shenandoah Valley, first famed through
the fanatical attempt of John Brown,in
defying the laws and customs of his
country, was captured or recaptured
eight times in three years. The Gov-
ernment Arsenal and armories which
were located there, were destroyed by
the government to prevent their cap-

Addison News.
April 29th.—Elder M. Biddle, of Mey-
ersdale, last Friday evening cloged a
series of meetings lasting two weeks,
in the Addison Christian church. The
attendance was very good, but there
were no additions to the membership
of the church. Mr. Biddle preached
some very excellent sermons and made
many friends while here. We would
have been pleased to have him remain
longer, but he had to go" from here to
Centerville to preach, and from there
to Meyersdale.
Jasper Augustine, of Uniontown, is
here on business. this week,
T. J. Augustine, one of our leading
merchants, spent Sunday and Monday
at Keyser’s Ridge. Something out
there seems to draw his attention that
way.
Mr. George Frazee, of Friendsville,
Md., and Miss Carrie DeHaven, of Ad-
dison, were married, last week, in Oak-
land, Md. They have gone to Friends-
ville, Md., to go to house-keeping.' We
wish them a long, happy life.
Cassius M. Hartzell and wife, of
Chicago, have returned to Addison to
spend the season at their summer
home. Mr. Hartzell is doing some
more repairing and is having a very
fine porch built to the front of his
house, which adds much to the good
appearance of the same.
Last Sunday evening Elder East-
burn, of the M. E. church, preached a
sermon on Odd Fellowship to the mem-
bers of Addison Lodge No. 444. His
discourse was a very able one and was
preached to a large audience.

Sand Flat News.
Apr. 28.—We have fine weather at
present, and farmers are busy sowing
oats and planting early potatoes.
W. B. Stevanus and T. R. Sufall were
callers at the home of J. 8. Stevanus,
Sunday last.
Last Wednesday a fire raged through
a portion of the eastern slope of Negro
mountain, doing much damage to for-
est and fences. It was almost impossi-
ble to stop the fire, on account of the
high wind.
Last Tuesday W. B. Tressler and J.
J. Stevanus started the drilling ma-
chine owned by E. K. Blauch and B. F.
Tressler. They began near Grants-

What Is Foley’s Kidney Cure?
Answer: Itis made froma preserip-
tion of a leading Chicago physician, and
one of the most eminent in the coun-
try. The ingredients are the purest
that money can buy, and are scientifi-
cally combined to get their utmost val-
ue. Sold by E. H. Miller,
Soaking It to the Insurer.
There is undoubtedly a great deal of
humbug afloat" with regard to the fire
insurance conditions in the United
States. The number of companies
which have gone out of business or re-
insured within the past year or so, give
wings to the idea that an unconjrolla-
ble fire loss is sole and sufficient reason
for a flag of distress and help needed
by some of these companies. May not
the real trouble lie in the internal
economy of the companies themselves,
in their underwriting abilities to cope
with an ever-yarting caloric? In the
long run, fire underwriting, as well as
the successful vending of pea-nuts, is a
matter of business ability—of brains.
Fire insurance conditions may be all
that they are cracked down to be, and
inadequate rates and sharp business
practices may be making the business
less of a bonanza and more of a hand
to mouth speculation, but in spite of all,
the great companies are making money
right along, sawing wood, saying noth-
ing and paying big dividends.—Insur-
ance Topics. :
A Lesson in Health.
Healthy kidneys filter the impurities
from the blood, and unless they do this
good health is impossible. Foley’s Kid-
ney Cure makes sound kidneys and
will positively cure all forms of kidney
and bladder disease. It strengthens
the whole system. Sold by E. H. Miller.
Brother Marshall is Right.
Some of the town’s staid conserva-
tives are crying out for another news-
paper, to be pitted against the Record’s
attitude toward town progress. Bless
the dear old slow conservatives, news-
papers are not built on their would-be
pattern. A second printery would
simply hump in for the good cause and
create more woe than ever for the
progress-opponents. The “Stand-stills”
will have to look a different direction
than toward a newspaper for comfort
in their efforts to keep the town a dead
stick.—Berlin Record.

Gentlemen :(—
I received your Asthmalene in good shape and in due time. I must say
that it is an elegant medicine and has done all you claim for it. I was not able
to walk up hill on account of my breath. After taking your medicine one day I
went to chopping timber and have been working right along every day that is
fit to work ; this is a very bad climate and this has been the worst kind of a
spring, hardly two daysalike. Iam sending an order enclosed in this to be sent
at once. Yours gratefully,
