to beat, eh?

dale, Pa., Pec. 6th, 1900, Mr. Daniel
Resh and Miss Annie look, both of
Shaw Mines.
DeWitt’'s Little Early Risers are
dainty little pills, but they never fail
to cleanse the liver,remove obstructions
and invigorate the system. Miller &
Shaler.
We call yourattention to the new ad-
vertisements of the Elk Lick Supply
Company and J. T. Jeffery. These peo-
ple are wide awake merchants, and no
purchaser can possibly go wrong by
going to their stores for the best of
goods at reasonable prices. They are
splendid people to deal with.
John Schramm, one of our well
known mail carriers, took a heavy cold,
last week, and had to abandon his job
until his health permits him to again
take his seat on the non-electric. Ile
is quite ill, we are sorry to say, and it
may be a week or more before he is
again able to resume his duties.
When you need a soothing and heal
ing antiseptic application for any pur-
pose, use the original DeWitt’s Witch
Hazel Salve, a well known cure for
piles and skin diseases. It heals sores
without leaving a scar. Beware of
counterfeits. Miller & Shaler.
Yesterday while Elmer Vought and
Ross lioller, of Boynton, were hunting
rabbits, Vought got a portion of a load
of shot into one of his legs. Holler
shot at a rabbit, and Vought, unob-
served, happened to be in line with his
aim. We are glad to say, however,
that he was not seriously hurt.
Mr. Jeseph Joy, while returning from
Mevyersdale, one day last week, says he
met several men carrying another man
into town who was badly wounded by
the accidental disenarge of his shotgun.
Mr. Joy did not know the man, but
says he noticed that the calf of one of
his legs was literally torn to shreds.
e have heard no further particulars.
Someone tells the story that the men
employed at the Bare Rocks quarry at
Milford recently opened up the winter
home of a den of snakes, in which a
large number of the occupants were
woven together in a mass. By reason
of their natural condition in winter the
snakes were unable to get away, and it
is said they were disposed of by crema-
tion.
Meyersdale has a population of 3,024,
according to the official census returns
for the census of 1900. The population
of the other towns of the county has
not yet been announced. Somerset, it is
said, has less than 2,000 people, but just
wait until you hear from Windber, and
then Meyersdale will not spout any
longer about being the metropolis
of the county.
Don’t use any of the counterfeits of
DeWitt’s Witeh Hazel Salve. Most of
them are worthless or liable to cause
injury. The original DeWitt’s Witch
Hazel Salve is a certain cure for piles,
eczema, cuts, scalds, burns, sores and
skin diseases, Miller & Shaler.
Small profits and quick returns is a
grand business principle. Better to
deal with a multitude than with a few.
A thousand nimble nickles are better
than a hundred slow dollars. Turning
over stock and money rapidly means
successful business, and those who
make the least margins of profit and
sell the most goods are generally the
biggest advertisers.
It is not right to say of an ad that
does not sell goods that it is worthless.
It may not sell a cent’s worth of goods,
yet still serve to keep the advertiser in
the minds of readers, and a later ad
will complete the conquest the first one
began. So long as we understand ad-
vertising to be cumulative in its ef-
fects, the success of the first of a series
of ads is not essential.

James Boss, teoloredyt the aged father
of Mrs. Scott Brown, died very sudden-
ly at the Brown residence, Tuesday
morning. The cause of his death was
due to old age more than anything
else. The deceased was aged 92 years,
8 months and 6 days. The remains
were taken to Winchester, Va.. to be
laid to rest by the side of his wife, who
died some years ago.
Help is needed at once when a per-

Mr. P. 8. Hay, while returning from
M. J. Beachy’s sale, last Friday eve-
ning, was struck by a hand sled on
which some boys were coasting down
the pavement leading from Mr. M. J.!
Beachy’s front gate to the borough
limits. He was badly bruised about
one of his ankles, and as a resnlt was
confined to his house for several days.
Boys should be more careful when en-
gaged in coasting.
The Salisbury Cornet Band will hold
a grand fair, festival and ball in the
McKinley building during the Hloliday
week. Besure to give the boys a liber-
al patronage, for it takes lots of money
to keep up a good band, and Salisbury
has a band that any town might well
be proud of. You will not miss a few
nickles, dimes or quarters, and the
band deserves. your patronage. For
further particulars see bills.
Thanksgiving was generally observ-

large numbers in the various churches
in towns and cities and reverently wor-

this place was largely attended,
thiose who heard the address of Dr.
Mackey speak of it in glowing terms.

One of the daintiest pictures possible
to imagine will be given free to every
reader of the great Philadelphia Sun-
day Press, next Sunday, December 16.
It is entitled “The Young Mother,” and
is the master piece of Miss Maud
Stumm. It is the second of a series of
reproductions of great paintings which
are being issued by The Sunday Press,
and is certain to create a sensation.
The beauty of the subject and the col-
oring render this picture peculiarly at-
tractive. It will be well to order next
Sunday’s Press today.
The Feinberg clothing store did busi-
ness in Salisbury only about ten days.
There was some dispute as to the own-
ership of their goods, and after a visit
from Sheriff Saylor the goods were
speedily packed up und shipped some-
where else. When our Burgess went
there to collect the transient retailer’s
license to which the borough is enti-
tled, he was ordered out of the store.
But all the same old Jerry J. didn’t
vamoose until the proprietor planked
down $10.C0, the license fee demanded.
