The Scientific American Navy Sup-
plement.
The Scientific American, which has al-
ways been identified itself very closely
with the interests of the Navy, is to be
congratulated on the extremely hand-
some and valuable “Navy Supplement”
which it has lately put before the pub-
lic. We think that,if the average read-
er had been asked beforehand what
kind of a work he would prefer upon
the Navy, he would have asked for just
such an issue as this.
Both the illustrations and the read-
ing matter are of the straightforward
explanatory kind which is necessary to
put a technical subject clearly before
the lay mind. Tt was a happy thought
to preface the work with a chapter up-
on the classification of warships and in-
sert a few diagrams by way of explana-
| tion of the subtle differences between
cruisers, monitors and battleships; for
after digesting this chapter one is pre-
pared to follow intelligently the detail-
ed descriptions “of the various ships
| which make up the bulk of the issue.
[ One of the best things about this num-
ber is that it does not merely give an
external illustration of each ship, but
it takes the reader down below decks,
and initiates him into the mysteries of
the magazines, handling rooms, ammu-
rition hoists and motive machinery.
The sectional views of the interior of
the turrets of the monitors are excep-
tionally fine, as are the large wood en:
gravings of the engines of the “Massa-
chusettes.” The last page of the num-
ber contains complete tables of the
new Navy, the auxiliary fleet and the
various naval guns. A handsome col-
ored map of Cuba and the West Indies
is furnished with this issue. We extend
our congratulations to our eontempo-
rary on the production of a work which
| is well conceived and admirably car-
ried out. This work is published by

In a little mining town up in Mon-
| tana there is a hotel in which there is
posted a notice to guests which reads
| as follows:
“READ THIS:
“(iuests of this hotel will please bear
in mind that we will not be responsible
for either their lives or their property.
There are places convenient where val-
uables may be deposited for safe keep-
ing, and whére life and accident iasur-
| ance policies may be secured.
“(+uests are requested to use proper
{eare and caution when shooting at
| each other in the dining room, as a
! reckless discharging of firearms is lia-
ble to result in the unnecessary killing
of innocent and unsuspecting parties.
“(Guests will be expected to pay for
| whatever tableware they break in
[throwing at one another. This rule
will be insisted on.
| “If guests have any complaint to
{ make regarding the conduct of waiters,
| they will please not come to us about
lit. The waiters carry pistols, and are
| supposed to know how to use them,
{ and they will settle all their own dif-
| ficulties. .
| “(Guests must not put their feet on
| the tables, especially if ladies are pres-
| ent. The act may be harmless enough,
| but there are fastidious people who ob-
| ject to it, and we are here to cater to
| the highest and most refined class of
| society.
| “Guests who are not willing to sleep
[in the same bed with another guest
{ need not stay at the hotel. We no not
| care for patronage of people who want
[the earth, with the moon thrown in,
| for one dollar.
| “This hotel positively will not bear
{the part of the funeral expenses of
| people who are killed while stopping
| here—not even those who are forced to
i shoot in the interest of society and
| good order.

| “Guests wishing to attract the atten-
tion of a waiter are requested to call!
| or whistle for him. This is better than
| shooting him through the ear or nose,
{ and, besides, it will save funeral ex-|
penses.
“The public will bear in mind that |
| this is no cheap house, but that it is a |
| first-class, high-toned hotel. Therefore |
| guests are expected to conduct them-
| s=lves in a gentlemanly, well-bred man-
ner.
