Lima,
THE STAR is in receipt of four commu- |
nications denouncing the School Board in |
the most bitter térms for electing Milton
Phillips principal of our schools.” The
writers of the same contend that A. A.
Streng was the man wanted in that
position by at least four-fifts of our citi-
zens. This may be true, for all we know
about it, but we cannot publish the com-
munications referred to, for the reason
that by so doing we would only open the
way for a long, bitter and useless con-
troversy that would do no one any good.
As for THE STAR, we have this to say:
What has been done is done, and it is the
duty of every good citizen to stand by
the principal and give him every possible
encouragement to make our schools a
success. We can not all be pleased at all
times, but no matter who is principal.
of our schools, let us get up no fight on
school matters, for this town has had
enough experience in that line to know
that such fights always make matters |
worse instead of better. Encourage the
principal elect, whether he is your choice
or not. |
The long looked-for event has at last
taken place—the collapse of the Salis-
bury cornet band. For some time the
boys have been quarreling among them-
selves, and it is as the Bible says, a house
divided against itself can not stand. Tt
is bad enough that the boys couldn’t pull
together, the citizens
contributed so liberally, of late, toward
the band’s support, But as the band is
now bursted, the citizens should demand
the instruments and other property that
they paid for and which belongs to them.
The members of the defunct band have
no right to said property and should be
required to surrender possession of the
same. These instruments could be used
to good advantage by the new band which
organized a few months ago, and which
is making good headway under the in-
struction of 8. L. Livengood. The new
band is determined to stick to it, but is
badly in need of better instruments... The
citizens should demand their property
now in the hands of the defunct band
and turn it over to the new band. Will
they do it? If not, why not?

Bill Pri tts ‘Captured an a “Rescued,
Bill Pritts, the noted Somerset county
moonshiner and murderer of old “Yoney”
Hochstetler, was captured at his home,
on Monday, by Constabie Allen Fore-
spring and two of Hochstetler's sons.
When Pritts saw the Constable and his
assistants approaching, he started ‘on a
run for the woods. He was ealled on to
stop, but refused to do so until Rol Ho-
stetler shot him through the arm with
his rifle. He then surrendered and was
removed to the house, but before he
could be taken to Somerset, some of his
friends arrived and drove the officer and
his posse away. The affair was imme-
diately reported in Somerset, jbut as vet
we have learned of no plans to recapture
the crafty old moonshiner. His arnewas
badly lacerated by the bullet that pierced
it, and it is believed that he could be
easily captured; but it is dangerous to at-
tempt it and will hardly be tried unless
there is a heavy reward offered.

A Country Editor Honored.
It affords us much pleasure to acknowl-

E. M. Correll, editor of the Heban (Neb.)
Journal; but it gives ns still more pleas-
ure to note the fact that he'is now the
acting Governor of Nebraska. Both of
us used to publish country papers in
Thayer county, Neb., and it is with the
keenest sense of pleasure that we learn
of o ur friend Correll’s good fortune.
Last fall Mr. Correll was elected to the
State Senate. and being a man of fine
ability, (you know all conntry editors are
able men) he was chosen Yak, of
that honorable body. Not long ago Mr.
Correll was called upon to fill the Execu-
tive chair, the Governor and Lieut. Gov-
ernor being absent. Thus did he become
the acting Governor of the great state of
Nebraska; and Tar Star will vouch for
it that he has been filling his high office
with credit to himself and to the state.
In the meantime, Mrs. Correll iis. edit-
ing the Acting Governor's paper and is
doing credit to herself and to the country
press. She is an editress of fine ability,
and the Hebron Journal is one of the best
country papers in America. * ]
