As many thinking persons in North umberland county predicted, the coal region saloon keepers, who banded to gether to observe the liquor laws after being threatened witli exposure, have violated their promise, as well as the solemn oatli taken at the original grant ing of licenses, and yesterday Sujier intendent Riley, of the Anti-Saloon league, appeared before Justice Vin cent, of Northumberland, and swore out warrants for the arrest of a num ber of Shamokiu saloon keepers for selling on Sunday. Rev. Riley, before the last session of license court, arrested ninety rum sellers of Shamokiu anil Mount Carmel for violation of the law,but on paying fines and promising to be good the cul prits were spared further trouble. At license court Judge Savidge took a hand by warning the saloon men,and suggesting that they form an anti-Sun day selling association. Deputy Pro thonotary Rietz visited the coal re gions for the express purpose of wit nessing the promises of the sellers to obey the law. The pith of the whole situation lies in the fact, generally recognized among the citizens of Northumberland coun ty, that there is an outrageous number of saloons in the coal region end of the county; aud as long as saloons must depend on an average of less than 200 persons—men, women and children —to support each one, there will be cut-throat competition or violation of the law in an effort to win trade. Six warrants were issued at Riley's instance and more arc to follow. Burgess Pursel is now ready to swear in the fire police for the ensuing year.
