Butler Epidemic Passed.
The Philadelphia corps of physicians
and nurses left Butler in a special car
over tho Pennsylvania Railroad for
Philadelphia Tuesday afternoon. Dur
ing their seven weeks stay in Butler
they took care of fifty fever patients
and lost but two hy death. They were
escorted to the station and bidden tare
well hy a delegation of members of the
Relief Committee. No meeting of the
executive committee was held Tuesday
evening. At present there are eleven
typhoid cases in the Emergency hos
pital at the County home. One fever
death occurred Tuesday.
Northampton and Monroe Democrats.
The deal undeistood to have been
made between the Democrats ot Mon
roe and Northampton tor the renonii

Coagressmau Mutchlcr two years
hence in the Twenty-sixth District
freezes out Carbon and Pike. It is pos
sible for Northampton and Monroe to
control the district nomination, and
they can divide it between them as

After several nights of experiment
to this desired end the writer decided
to apply the principle adopted by the
masseurs, who begin their manipula
tions "at the point farthest from the
•seat of difficulty," which in the case
of insomnia would be the feet. Lying
on the right side, with the knees to
gether and considerably tlexed, the
victim of insomnia should begin to
pedal both his feet slowly up and
down, with the movement entirely in
the ankles. The pedaling should keep
time with the natural rhythm of res
piration and be continued until it is
followed by deep and spontaneous
breathing.
Several people who have tried this
remedy report that involuntary deep
breathing invariably begins before
they have pedaled up and down a
dozen times. In obstinate cases of in
somnia tlie patient may need to keep
up the pedaling two or three minutes
or even more, with intermissions, if
necessary. The treatment may also be
varied by moving the feet alternately
instead of simultaneously, though the
latter method has proved the more
speedily efficacious in the cases known
to the writer. The explanation of the
result obtained is probably simple.
The blood is pumped from the head,
and with the removal of brain tension
a general relaxation follows, with a se
quent deep respiration and its result

house by means of a sign is of very
ancient origin. In the great cities of the
east and among the ancient Egyptians
such a practice must have been unnec
essary, as all trades were classified
and confined to certain sections of the
city, and then all wares were exposed
to full view, as they were displayed in
open booths.
The history of Grecian signboards Is
meager, yet the allusions of Aris
tophanes and Lucian to signboards war
rant our belief in their use by the
Greeks. Athenanis tells us, "He hung
the well known sign in front of his
house."
Advancing to Homan times, there is
abundant evidence of signs, as the dis
coveries of Pompeii and Ileraculaneum
amply testify. In the EtjM-nal City
some of the streets derived tffl-ir names
from signs, just as hundreds of London
streets have been so named. The Ho
man street Vitus I'rsi Tilcati was
named from the sign, for, as the name
Indicates, it was the street of"The
Rear With the Hat on " But it was
hot until late in the fifteenth century
that the custom gained a footing in
England, first of all among the taverns
and alehouses. 1..-iter came the neces
sity of distinguishing between certain
siiops brought about by the fact that
the houses were not numbered and the
people could not read word signs.—
