than
human beings, and spared the woman
cast to them in the arena. It is astonish
ing how little sympathy women have
for women. In the home the mistress
sees the maid with the signs of suffering
she recognizes so well, but she does not
lighten the sick girl's load by a touch of
her finger. In the store the forewoman
sees the pallor and exhaustion which
mark womanly weakness, but allows
nothing for them. It is work or quit.
Doctor Pierce's Favorite Prescription
makes weak women strong and sick
women well, by curing the womanly
diseases which undermine the health
•nd sap the strength. "Favorite Pre
scription" establishes regularity, dries
weakening drains, heals inflammation
and ulceration, and cures female weak
ness.
" When I first commenced using Dr. Pierce's
medicines," writes Mrs. George A Strong, of
Gansevoort, Saratoga Co., N. Y. "I was suffer
ing from female weakness, a disagreeable drain,
bearing down pains, weak and tired feeling all
the time. I dragged around in that way for
two years, then 1 began taking your medicine.
After taking the first bottle I began to feel
b«tt*r I took four botles of Dr. Pierce's Favor
ite Prescription, two of ' Golden Medical Dis
covery,'one viai of the 'Pleasant Pellets,' also
used one liottle of Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy.
Now I feel like a new person. I can't thank you
enough for your kind advice and the good your
medicine has done me."
"Favorite Prescription" makes weak
women strong, sick women well. Ac
cept no substitute for the medicine which
works wonders for weak women.
Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets are the
most desirable laxative for delicate
women.

In such systems of farming as sugar
production in Hie south and wheat
production in the northwest a condi
tion has been reached, even upon land
originally of great fertility, where a
system of rotation must lie employed.
The idea is being advocated that the
government should brand horses upon
the hoof, as do foreign governments,
instead of the flesh. The pain is com
paratively small and the mark lasting.
On the continent of Europe the root

but in America stock celery is general

The durability of roads depends
largely upon the power of the materials
of which they are composed to resist
those natural and artificial forces
which are constantly acting to destroy
them. The fragments of which they
are constructed are liable to lie at
tacked in cold climates by frost and in
all climates by water and wind. If
composed of stone or gravel, the par
ticles are constantly grinding against
each other and being exposed to the
impact of the tires of vehicles and the
feet of animals. Atmospheric agencies
are also at work" decomposing and dis
integrating the material. It is obvious
ly necessary, therefore, that great care
be exercised In selecting for the sur
facing of roads those stones which are
less liable lo be destroyed or decom
posed by these physical, dynamical and
chemical 'oiees.

NEW SHORT STORIBS
Starlet of Sarah Jraniiio.
Sarah Jennings, wife of the first
Duke of Marlborough, Is famous in
history for tuany things, aruong them
being her violent temper. After ber
great husband's death Sarah spent the
remaining years of her life in quarrel
ing with her daughters and marrying
her granddaughters. <»n<* of the latter,
the Duchess of Manchester, a special
favorite of the old duchess, had a sharp
tongue also. Her mother and grand
mother had long been at variance. "My
Bweet duchess," said the cider woman
to her one day in an overflow of kind
ness, "you were always the best of
God's creatures, and 1 love you mighti
ly. but you have a mother." "Yes, and
she has a mother," came the quick re
ply. Sarah's revenge on I.ady Bate
nian. who had offended her, is amus
ing. She possessed a portrait of Ivady
Bateman, which she made the means
of her vengeance. "She did not give it
away," says Louisa Stuart, who tells
the story, "nor sell it to a broker, nor
send it up to a lumber garret, nor even
turn it to the wall. She had the face
blackened over and this sentence, 'She
Is much blacker within,' inscribed in
large characters on the frame, and,
thus placed in her usual sitting room,
It was exhibited to all beholders."
Walking Skirt*.
The fashion of short walking skirts
Is a boon, but does not seem to have
met with popular favor enough to have
been adopted for the smarter cloth
gowns. These are still long enough to
trail considerably. The sheathlike
skirt is much modified, and the gored
skirt with circular side and a little full
ness just at the back Is much more of
a favorite. There are skirts with one,
two or three flounces, but the plain
skirts with tremendous flare and trim
med with the flat trimmings are made
in the handsomest materials. Velvet
bands trim many gowns, while stitched
bands of silk or satin still remain in
fashion and are used on the handsom
est of velvet gowns for the street and
on the embroidered lace gowns for
evening wear. Both rough and smooth
cloths are used, the rough, shaggy
ones for morning and made short, the
smooth cloths for afternoon and rath
er smarter wear made long.-—Harper's
Bazar.
Winter HornmhorliiK.
Speaking of an icy time reminds us
that the horses should be shod so that
they can be prepared to travel in such
a case, says American Cultivator. Ei
ther have them rough shod before such
a season comes, or, if they have not far
togo at a time or heavy loads to draw,
they may be worked without slices In
the winter on the dirt roads. A bare
footed horse slips less than one with
shoes the calks of which are dull, and
many farmers drive them so in winter,
though it would be scarcely advisable
if they had to take heavy loads of prod
uce to market over the paved streets of
the city. Many a good horse have we
seen badly injured by slipping and
straining, though he did not fall, while
the number killed because of broken
legs, that might not have been broken
if they had been properly shod, is great
every winter.
When to first In.
The fall is a very good time to begin
the poultry business. Buying fowls in
tiic fail when they may be bought
• heap is a surer and better way for the
beginner than to buy eggs in the spring.
Eggs are uncertain, while the fowls
may be depended on.and the purchaser
is sure of what lie is getting.
The farm poultry raiser who sells off
all tiie obi liens at this season or any
time is surely making a mistake. It is
true tin' old liens are not very good
winter layers, but they will lay a num
ber of eggs in the spring and summer
if they are not more than two or three
years old, and the eggs from them are
the ones that produce strong, big
boned, healthy chickens that are able
1o withstand disease.
How to Cook Smelts.
Smelts are delicious covered with
lemon juice and allowed to stand for
nil hour before cooking. Then roll
them in flour and saute or fry them in
deep fat. If, after the fish have been
rolled in the flour, the heads and tails
are fastened together with a toothpick
and they are cooked in that shape, they
may be used as a border for the plat
ter while the potato occupies the cen
ter. The fastenings should of course
be removed before sending them to the
table.
Hon to Wash Woolena.
Woolen goods when washed in soap
and water shrink and acquire the odor
of the soap. Therefore steep the arti
cles in a warm solution of washing so
da for several hours and then, after the
addition of warm water and a few
drops of ammonia, wash and rinse in
lukewarm water.
