    Application of HOHII Material.
The evils from Improper construction
of stone roads are even greater than
those resulting from the use of im
proper material. Macadam never in
tended that a heterogeneous conglom
eration of stones and mud should lie
called a macadam road. The mistake
is often made of depositing broken
stone on an old road without tirst pre
paring a suitable foundation. The re
sult in most cases Is that the dirt and
mud prevent the stone from packing
and by the action of traffic ooze to the
surface, while the stones siuk deeper
and deeper, leaving the road as bad as
before.
At Whakarewarewa, New Zealand,
there are geysers, hot springs, boiliug
pools, mud volcanoes and hot water
falls.
Santa Claus is unknown in Spain.
The three Magi are supposed to be the
ihlldren's gift brlngers.

1 Clergrymen Collect Their Own Do«.
! An extraordinary survival from the
j primitive tradition of the clergy openly
I collecting their own dues in kind from .
| the people may now be seen in full swing
j in the rural districts of upper Savoy, in
Switzerland. Every year about the mid
dle of October clergymen, attended by j
youths bearing sacks and baskets, go
from village to village, receiving the con
tributions of their parishioners. No sort
of consumable commodity comes amiss,
though money is most favored, and ev
ery evening the sack or basket goes back
heavily loaded. These contributions are
a popular test of respectability, and
many a housewife has been known to
borrow the whole amount of her offering
to the parochial incumbent. —London Ex

Kruei nnil Vine* on flazzas.
The foliage of the rose is ordinarily
sparse and for purposes of piazza
screens needs to be supplemented by
that of soiue other climber In harmony
with it. This cannot be that of the
wistaria or trumpet creeper or yet of
the pipe vine, for these are all of the
coarse, masculine form of plant covers,
but Instead something that is both deli
cate and substantial, as the honeysuc
kle, with its fine, leafy stems, produc
ing a well disposed screen with tlowers
that are inconspicuous as compared
with roses and keep coming all the sea

"Are you not a brother of Chief In- ,

"I am Chief Inspector Schmidt," said

Another time the grand duke was wait- ;

"Who is your father?"
"The station master."

Cultivate Hepose.
Sarah Bernhardt says that writers on
beauty often try to impress upon their
readers that neither joy nor grief, neither
laughter nor tears, should be permitted to
war the smoothness of the skin or the
softness of the mouth's curves. They
should have the face look like a wax
mask. There is, however, a happy medi
um between the expressionless doll un
wrinkled face and the face which is full
of character, but wrinkled by uncontroll
ed temper and ungoverned moods. We
should never try to feel, but cultivate self
control that subdues the manifestations
of feeling in puckerings. Cultivate re
pose, says the divine Sarah, if you desire
to remain young and beautiful.
The Japaneae Plnma.
Every variety of Jananese plum has
a tendency to overproduction, which
frequently kills the young tree. Both
as a protection to the young tree and
for securing good, large, marketable
fruit at least one-half of the crop
should be removed soon after the fruit
Is set says one authority.
