HUN RETREAT |

Austrian Losses Are Appalling
in Killed, Captured and War
Booty, Says Gen. Diaz
40,000 PRISONERS TAKEN
Enemy Corpses Cover the Ground of
Battle on Piave River Front Show-
ing Terrible Punishment Sus-
tained in Enforced Retreat.
Washington, D. C.—Austrian losses
in the retreat across the Piave includ-
ed an appalling number of troops Kkill-
ed, more than 40,000 made prisoner
and an enormous amount of war booty, i
said a report from General Diaz, the
Italian commander, cabled from Rome
to the Italian embassy.
Rome. — Premier Orlando publicly
announced from the bandstand in the
center of a garden party, given by the
British embassy for disabled soldiers,
that the Italian army had been vic-
torious on the Piave.
News of the victory has spread
throughout Italy. Everywhere there
have been demonstrations and rejoic-
ing.
Extremely heavy losses in men and
material have been suffered by the
Austro-Hungarians in the defeat which
the Italians have administered to them
on the Piave front, the war office an-
nounced. The enemy has been driven
from the entire west bank of the
Piave, except at one point, and was
able to cross the river only under the
deadly fire of the Italian artillery.
The number of prisoners actually
counted exceeded 40,000.
The Austrian dead cover the ground
of the battle in extraordinary num-
bers.
With the American Forces On the
Marne.—American troops on the
Marne front captured the northwest-
ern part of Belleau wood. The Amer-
icans cleared this strategic position
of all Germans, captured some pris-
oners and took five machine guns.
The Americans now are in com-
plete possession of the woods. The
attack was begun with a heavy bar-
rage, after which the Americans went
over almost immediately and smoked
out the Germans, whose positions
were regarded as almost impregnable.
The operation lasted only half an hour.

Blizzard Along Southern Coast.
Buenos Aires.— A snowstorm that
began Saturday developed into a ter-
rific blizzard throughout Southern
South America doing great damage on
land and spreading havoc among the
shipping along the southern coast.
Nothing afloat has yet been able to en-
ter or leave Montevideo Harbor. An
American merchantman anchored here
was forced to signal for assistance to
prevent her being torn from her moor-
ings. Wireless calls were received
from several large ships at sea.
Amundsen Ready to Start.
Copenhagen.—A report says that
Roald Amundsen is ready to start for
the North Pole from Christiana. The
expedition has provisions for five
years.
Wants Pacific Monroe Doctrine.
London. — William M. Hughes, the
Australian premier, upon the conclu-
sion of the imperial conference in
London, will go to the United States
to place before President Wilson a
full and frank statement of Australia’s
policy regarding a Monroe Doctrine
for the Pacific. Premier Hughes will
explain that the position of Australia
is one such as is essential to its ter-
tritorial integrity and that it should
control the islands of the Southern
and Western Pacific or that they
should be in the hands of “friendly
civilized nations.”
No Police Court in Two Days.

Prelate Against Prohibition. N
Milwaukee.—In a letter sent to all
the pastors in the Milwaukee Roman
Catholic archdiocese, and made pub-
lic here, Archbishop S. G. Messmer
forbids priests under his jurisdiction
assisting in prohibition movements,
and denies to prohibitionists use of
church property for holding meetings.
10,000 Sailors Vote to Strike.
Chicago. — Ten thousand lake sea-
men, on nearly 400 vessels, were Tre-
ported to have vote? in all ports on
the Great Lakes, to strike July 29, un-
less the employers, members of the
Lake Carrier's Association, agree to
the abolition of discharge books. The
sailors of the Lake Seamen's Union
also will ask increased wages.
Bolsheviki Official Killed.
Moscow.—Volodarsky, commissioner
for press affairs, and a prominent Bol-
sheviki, was shot dead in a street of
Petrograd.
Two Airmen Killed in Fall.
Miami, Fla.—Lieut. Duncan C. Cam-
eron of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Sergt Er-
nest L. Ahlstrand of Chicago, both
members of the Marine Corps, Avia-
tion Section, were instantly killed at
Curtis Field, near here, when an air-
plane in which they were making a
practice flight fell about 900 feet.

First Fiction Known.
The oldest work of fiction extant
is thought to be the “Tale of Two Broth-
ers,” written 3.200 years ago by the
Theban scribe Ennana, librarian of the
palace of King Menepthah, the sup-
posed Pharaoh of the Exodus. The
tale, it appears, was written for the
entertainment of the crown prince,
who subsequently reigned as Seti II.
Flis name appears in two places in the |
manuscript, probably the only surviv-
ing autograph signature of an Egypt-
ian king. This ptece of antique fiction,
written on nineteen sheets of papyrus
in a beld hieratic hand. was purchased
in Italy by Mme. d'Orbiney, who sold
it in 1857 to the authorities of the
British museum, where it is now
tnown as the D'Orbiney papyrus.
