gawicz, seyen years old, of Shenan-
doah, commenced to pick it with a
nail, and his left. hand had to be am-
putated. .
Miss Nellle Murry, of Lost Creek, &
graduate nurse of the training school
for nurses of Kings County hospital,
New York, has enlisted in the base
hospital unit. §
Bathing after a hearty supper, Har
ry Himmelberger, aged nineteen, Leb-
anon, was fatally stricken with paraly-
sis of the heart, in Swatara Creek, Val-
iey Glen Park.
Easton school board increased the
salary of Superintendent Robert E.
Laramy frcm $3000 to $3500, and the
salary of Secretary R. BE. Peifer from
$1500 to $1600. 3
Frederick Turner, aged sixty-nine,
veteran Pennsylvania railroad engin-
eer, was found dead in Kittanning a
block from his home. Death was due
to heart disease. ;
A loose plank hurled William Bach-
ert, of Quakake; John Boland, jersey
City, and their motorcycle into the
fake at Lakeside, but fishermen rescu-
ed them from drowning.
The skeleton of Boris Conat, aged
twenty-seven, who disappeared from
Coaldale six weeks ago, has been
found in the mountains near Tamaqua,
with $60 in the clothing.
Judgment was rendered in favor of
Mifflin county by Justice D. C. Ha-
maker in the suit instituted by J. Har-
ry Sides, one of the county Auditors
for $39 alleged to he due him.
Driving a horse for the first time,
Mrs. G. S. Sutton, near Bloomsburg,
figured in an ugly runaway, in which
she suffered a fractured collar-bone
and her daughter ugly bruises.
Because so many parents have been
imploring him to spare their sons, B.
W. Wilde has notified Governor Brum-

Commissioner- John Price Jackson,
of the state department of labor, has

Walking In her sleep, Mrs. Austin
Conlin, aged eighty-four, of South
Bethlehem, who is deaf and blind, fell
from a second-story window into a
geranium bed, but escaped without

The Lehigh Valley Railroad com-
pany notified its employes that the
pass privilege will be greatly restrict
od on account of the war, and no half-
rate transportation will be issued for
pleasure trips.
Traveling at eighty miles an hour
down a steep grade on a motorcycle
near Carlisle, Paul Bailey and Walter
Horst, of that place, were thrown
thirty feet at a stone wall, and yet
neither was badly hurt.
Placing his head on the rail in the
path of a fast Pennsylvania passenger
train, a man believed to be John Bish-
oy, address unknown, was fatally in-
jured near Greensburg. He ded be-
fore the train reached there.
Captured in a battle along the Som-

A movement has been launched at
Oonnellgville by Harry Dunn, former
captain of Company D, N. G. P., to
raise a fund to provide members of
Company D and the hospital corps of
the Tenth regiment with luxuries while
at the front
Fire in the plant of the Sheffield
Glass Bottle works at Sheffield, near
Warren, crsed a shut-down of the
plant for about a week. Half of the
roof of the plant was burned off and
soventy-five employes thrown out of
their regular employment.
In an effort to get a piece of ice
from an ice cream container, Leona
Myrel Christopher, aged two, daughter
of Oakey Christopher, of York Run,
near Uniontown, plunged head first
fnto the water and ice and drowned
pefore being discovered by her mother.
Discovering two men attempting to
force an ent-ance to his residence near
Emithton, John Laterbaugh, a farmer,
killed one of the men in a gun battle
thet lasted half a hour. The dead
gnan was Angust Cairani, aged thirty,
gddregs unknown. The other man os-
