Stewart Smith.
Stewart Smith, for fifty years a
resident of Salisbury, died suddenly
at his desk in the Kauffman store ia !
Pittsburg on Tuesday morning, March
7, aged 63 years, 8 months and 22
days.
Mr Smith was a member of the
Brethren Church of Salisbury, being
one of the charter members and was
one of the active workers in the con-
gregation until the family moved
from Salisbury in 1907. He remained
a member of the local church dur-
ing the time he resided elsewhere. De-
ceased was born in Salisbury, June
16, 1852. He was a son of William and
Caroline Dively Smith. On July 27,
1872, he was married to Eliza Ara-
minta Sipe, of Mill Run, who preced-
ed him to the spirit world in 1914
Four daughters were born to Mr. and
Mrs. Smith, one dying in infancy and |
Katherine, the youngest, died in 1900
at the age of 20 years. The daughters
who survive are Mrs. S. P. Schell of
Ambridge, and Mrs. C. H. Beale, who
resides in Hazelwood. Mrs. Victoria
Baumgartner and Mrs. Robt. John-
ston, both of Salisbury, are sisters. |
Mr. Smith for a number of years was
a successful teacher in the schools of
Elk Lick township and Salisbury and
later was operator for the Western
Union Telegraph and manager in En-
{en & Reeser’s store. When death
summoned him he was employed in
Kaufman’s store in Pittsburg. The fu-
aeral was conducted from the home
af Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Johnston and
interment made in the I. O. O. F. cem-
atery. The services were held in the
Brethren Church on Thursday af-
ternoon, at 2:30 by his pastor, Rev.
Foughnour assisted by Rev. Dr. Young
and Rev. Monn.
Mrs. McKinley Surprised.
Mrs S. R. McKinley was pleasantly
surprised on Tuesday evening, March
7, when a number of her friends met
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Petry to celebrate Mrs. McKinley's
Birthday. Those present were: Mes-
dames Wm. C. Lichliter, A. M. Lichty,
fred Petry, Frank Petry, Harry Mec-
Cure, Savilla Boyer, H. H. Maust, J.

Commencement.
The Teachers’ Training Class of the
Garrett Sunday Schools will hold
their commencement exercises Fri
day evening, March 17, at 8 o'clock in
the Opera House. Everybody is cordi-
ally invited to attend. The address
. will be given by Rev. Ira S. Monn of
| Salisbury. No admission will be
| charged but an offering will be taken.

| The Piano recital held in Amity
| Hall, Meyersdale, last Thursday by
| Misses Rene Brant, Emma Merrill,
| Ruth Musser and Pansy Miller, as-
sisted by J. Warren Erb, of Pittsburg,
|was a great success. The audience,
| which was large and very apprecia-
[tive expressed its pleasure by its |
| hearty appplause. The musicians cap-
| tivated their audience by their bril-
i liant technique combined: with expres- |-
| sive interpretation. Mr. Erb’s num-
fibers were very well liked especial
|ly “Rigoletto, Fantasie” by Verdi-
| Lizst. The people of Garrett manifes-
[ted their interest in “our girls” by
| turning out in goodly numbers for the
| recital.
Entertained Their Friends.
Mr. and Mrs. John Kretchman of
| Meyersdale entertained some of their
| Garrett friends last Wednesday at a
dinner. The present were: Mes-
dames A. R. Miller, W. A. Merrill, L.
| W. Pollard and daughter, Mary, S.
| P. Lease and son, Leroy, H. H. Nay-
lor, E. Schrock, Fred Godel and daugh-
| ter, Margaret. The ladies all report a
| 1ovely time.
