pg ETT ————— RAS REE A se a ’ COUNCILMAN STATES POSITION I desire to explain pln letly my po- sition in the present campaign. are facing one of the most important elections ever held in this borough. On next Tuesday, Nov. 2nd, you will be called upon to elect three council men whose duty it will be to act up- on and settle valuable franchises and the zens in general. Serving as councilman during the past four years and having been ac- tively interested in the affairs per- taining to the same as all fair-mind- ed citizens who place the public wel- fare and justice above the mercenary interests know, I am in a position to back up the statements I make. Owing to the fact that I have con- stantly opposed the renewal of a con- tract with the Sand Spring Water Company for fire protection at the ex- orbitant rate of $500 per year, and right here I want to state that fires have not exceeded three per year during my term of council. Cer- tain political elements of this speciai privilege corporation which has been ° “gouging” the taxpayers for years, have endevored by the unfair. con-| temptible methods always resortea | to by “Big Business Ward-Heelers” to | eliminate me from council. | As stated above I have served four | years as Chairman of the Water and | light Committee to the best of my ability and to the detrimet of my own personal affairs having been required to lose numerous days from my regu- lar employment, nevertheless, it has been the source of much pleasure and satisfaction to me to fulfill my ! obligationss as required by the office regardless of my person- ¢ al losses financially. And I consider it the solemn duty of every true American to interest himself and as- sist in the affairs of the Municipality and Commonwealth in which he may reside. . It was not my desire to seek another term of this office but I was compelled to enter the field by a num- ber of honorable and respectable citizens and tax-payers without my knowledge of their filling out and filing my petition and who, apprecia- ting the fight I made in behalf of the long-suffering taxpaying public and against Special Privilege Corporations desired my return to the council. A great many of the voters are not aware of the “dirty underhand” .methods used and still being used to effect my defeat or the defeat of any one standing for the conservative ex- penditure of Borough funds. ( Their sinister efforts were partially success- | ful at the last Primary election I hav- ing lost the nomination of the Repub- i lican ballot by but 2 votes however gaining unsolicited the Democrat, | Socialist and Washington nominations which places my name on the ballot. liable parties (also tax-payers) that money and liquid refreshments (?) not Sand Spring water by the way, was unsparingly used at the last Pri-, maries by a “Ward Feeler” who form- | erly was an expert in the mixing and serving of Spiritous Liguors and is now afflicted with and working in the interests of a local “Special Privilege ! Corporation” which for reasons here- tofore mentioned want me cut of the way, also aided and assisted by the subtle associates back of him. N After reading the letters signed A ‘Small Taxpayer, “ A Taxpayer” and “A Business Man” who by the way re fused to divulge his or their name and whose insinuations reflect upon the honesty, the present Council I am compelled to write this letter in self defense. Questioning the sincerity of the in- tentions of those letter writers and firmly believing the same ‘letters eor- iginated from a special Privilege Cor- poration source anxious to obtain con- trol of the Council for their own part- icular purposes or in shert desiring a pliable Council favoring the renewal of a contract which means much to the Corporation but detrimental to the best interests of taxpayers and the town. This contract if renewed under the old conditions will cause an increase in taxation and a long delay of much needed improvements. Now then Mr. Voter, inspect the numerous substant- ial street improvements, the fair and equal distribution of lights and the best street light system of any small town in the country today (other town have adopted this system) and don’t forget the $750.00 per year for 10 years secured from The Meyersdale Electric. Y.ight, Heat and Power Com- pany franchise’ privilege for use of Streets (not- caring to take up too much gpace I~omith, other improve- ments). . And then consider the position of the Sand Spring Water Company in regards to the borough. Do you know this: is the only public service cor- poration not paying anything w ever to the borough for the use of streets, alleys etc.? 1 | Do you realize the amount of dam- You | important contracts, matters vital wo | interests of taxpayers and citi-! | and family. 3 ‘atives and friends in Akron, Ohio. |& ‘A. Mrs. | age done to our streets, the paved ,ones, especially by” the Sand Springs water Company etc. I consider the coné¢essionS to the amed corporation equally as ot ou as eoncessions granted by the borough to the Light Co. and oth- | er corporations. In the water compa- ny case I insist that this corporation either give a money consideration or by granting free water for fire pro- { tection for the valuable privileges en- ' joyed. { When you are approached next | Tuesday or before by the Sand | Spring Water Company ‘“heelers” ask them why they are so anxious to de- feat me. Also is necessary to have this crowd dictate who shall go on as councilmen -and who shall not? I leave this to your consideration on ! election day. . My name will appear on the Demo- cratic, Socialist and Washington | party tickets; regardless of your par- ty affiliations you can vote for me if you think I am deserving of your con- fidence. Remember a straight Republican vote means a vote for “Sand Spring Water”, trusting I have made my pos- ition clear to you and soliciing your support on Nov. 2nd. Thanking you for past favors, I re- main, YOU DON'T NEED ELEGTRIG POWER to keep your home Clean the year around when you use a Torrington Super- ior. The suction is guar- anteed to equal that of a $30 00 to $60.00 electric cleaner—at a fraction of their initial cost. ‘i'here are no wires to connect— no bills for current, and these superior are vastly more handy than the clumsy wire dragging electrics.
