The bill placing a 21-2 per cent ad
valorem tax on anthracite coal has
been approved by Governor Brum-
baugh. The new coal law takes the
place of the act passed by the 1913
legislature, the constitutionality of
which is now in the state supreme
court. The act is exepected to raise
about $4,500,000 in the next two years
half of which is to go to the state
for road improvements and the other
half is to be returned to the counties
jn which the coal is produced.
Gov. Brumbaugh Monday night an-
nounced his approval of the sixth
workman’s compensation act. The
act formed one of the big pieces of
legislation of the session just closed
They established complete system of
workman’s compensation and a state
insurance fund with a proposed con-
stitutional amendment to make com-
pensation compulsory. The governor
earlier in the day signed the two bills
to bring the anthracite and bitumin-
ous miners of the state under the com-
pensation system. The system will
take effect next January.
All of the 25000 Italian reservists
in Western Pennsylvania will at once
be notified to hold themselves in
readiness for service in their coun-
try’s army. The Italian ambassador in
Washington has notified Jos. Natali,
Italian vice consul in Pittsburg to get
into touch with all able-bodied reserv-
ists between the ages of 20 and 39
years. These men have received a fall
military training; there are about
8,000 of them in Pittsburg. The cali in-
vited attention to an Italian law which
holds all persons of Italian birth sub-
ject to the call to arms regardless
whether they have become citizens of
another country or not. The penalty
for refusal to obey the call is impris-
onment in event of a later return to
Italy.

For Clothes Moth.
A prominent lady in the enterpris-
ing county seat of Cumberland county
wrote to State Zoologist H. A. Surface,
asking, “If I put my furs and winter
ciothes in a room, and burn several
formaldehyde lamps in the room will
they kill any moth eggs that may hap-
pen to be on the garments? How can
1 best protest such articles from dam-
age by such pests?” To these inquiries
Prof. Surface replied as follows:
“I can say that formaldehyde lamps
or candles burned in a room for the
purpose of killing the clothes moths
in their egg or larvae stages will not
bring the desired results.
«pormaldehyde is a good germicide
but is not an insecticide. Insects can-
not be killed by the methods that are
employed by persons doing sanitary
household fumigation, according to
the directions or methods of a health
officer. The method of fumigation
recommended by a physician may be
all right for killing disease germs but
is worthless for destroying insects.
The material is not the same and the
results will not be satisfactory.
“Another good method is simply
to brush the clothing well or whip it
hard in the sunshine; air it well, and
then put it away in good paper Or
tight cloth sacks that are tied tightly.
it is important in storing woolen goods
or articles of fur or feathers for the
summer to be sure they are stored
away tightly, and the moths cannot
get in them. Where they are put in
boxes, strips of paper should be pasted
over cracks both Inside and outside.
If there are put into paper sacks they
should be bound and tied tightly, A
double tying is liable to be quite
beneficial.
“Moth balls are useful only for the
purpose of helping to prevent the en-
trance of such pests. It should be re-
membered that they do not Kill the
pests if they are present . Really
tight sealing of receptacles or tight
tying of good paper bags is more eff-
ective against the protection of cloth-
ing from moths than are the foul sme-
oth balls. Of course, with this
