Ralu Rain, Rain —has been the order of the
day, for several days in succession. We hate con
cluded to do as they used to do in old Colonial times,
when they trusted in God and tried to keep their
powder dry— let it rain.
The Prospect of getting the river bridge at this

hope it may grow better as the season advances.
With the bridge in its present condition, one of the

Bevered, Let the Doctors attend to this case imme

Saturday was quite a gay day for the sporting
men of a pugilistic turn of mind, in town. At one
time it seemed as if a free fight was to be introduced
into the order of exercises. The preseit High Con
stable and ex Chief of Police, in their almost super
human efforts to bring order out of chaos, came very
near getting confused, themselves—which would
have made "confusion worse confounded."
School Moneys.—The attention of School Di
rectors is called to the following Law, passed, we
understand at the last session of the Legislature,
* "It shall be the duty of the board of directors, in
each school district, to publish an annual statement
of the amount of moneys received anfl expended,
and the amount due from collectors and setting forth
all the financial operations of the district, in not less
than ten written or printed hand-bills to be put up
iu the most public places in the district."
Spring— The modest creature! seems to be
afraid to come, fearing no doubt, that all the young
Ladies will exclaim with one accord that ''spring
has arriv and, perhaps write it down too in those
choice poetical "confusions" which almost everybody
at a particularly tender poiut in their existence, in
dulge in. The Lilacs, Johnny-Jump-ups, Blue birds
and other acenmpanyiaeuts ot tho season, don't seem
as plenty as on former May-days.
Beyond the Mississippi,™vA work by Albert

West from the Mississippi to tho Pacific—sketches
and incidents of pioneer life--Gre.it Nat urul curiosi

Book, is one of the most fascinating of writers.

The Band, under the inspiriting influences of
some of its warm-blooded members, got out into the
streets on Saturday evening last, to give the good
people of tho tow n a few "melogeous toots but
finding the air rather too bracing, after one or two
lively "lints," concluded to let that old bag of wind,
eirnauied JEolus, —who had taken his station in the
North West comer of the compass,—Jo his own
blowing. We presume everybody who heard _the
playing were pleased with it ; though we dil'nt see
any handkerchiefs waving out oi windows, nor off
stoops or balconies—the air was too cold for that
kind of applause. Several hundred, or less, of sicall
boys, notwithstanding the iuclemency of the weather
graced the occasion with their presence, nni gave
demonstrative evidences of their approval.
Sudden Death.—Our townsman. Mr Bernard
Ofner, died very suddenly ou Thursday afternoon, at
his residence, die had been confined but two days,
aai while his diseaso—hernia—was of a lerious
charrcter, yet hie attending physician did not think
his case a dangerous one.
Mr. Olncr was among the oldest and most respect

This medicine, invented by Dr. J. H.SCHITXCK, of
Philadelphia, is intended to disolve the food and
make it into chyme, the first process of digestion.---
By cleansing the stoma h with Sehenck's Mandrake
Pills, the Tonic soon restores the appetite, and food
that could not be eaten before using it will be easily
digested.
Consumption cannot be cured by Sohecck's Pul

"MEXICO UNDER MAXIMILIAN."
BY HKNIiY M. FLINT* ESQ.,
Author of "Druids' Letters," "Life of Senator
Douglass," Ac.
12mo. Green English Cloth, $2.00.
In presenting this work te the Public, the Pub
lishers are actuated by a desire to furnish a cheap
and convenient vehicle for the transmission of light
and instruction to the masses upon a subject con
cerning which, there is both doubt and misappre
hension iD the minds of all classes of our country
men, This has arisen as much, perhaps, from the
heretofore itnper r eet sources of intelligence concern
ing that unhappy country, as from the influence of
" our domestic politics ujion the questions growing out •
of the consideration of Its History. The Revolution
through which our own Country has just passed, has
not been without its influence, though indirectly, up
on the fortunes of the Mexican Nation, and "while
we contemplate the wonderful changes wrought in
the United States by five years of s'rife, we are nat
urally led to inquire the results achieved by the
revolutions of our Southern Sister once the Repub
lic and now the Empire of Mexico. Our Author
has answered this inquiry in > manner both satisfac
tory and conclusive, in the Volume we have just is
sued from the Press, and we commend it to the citi
zens of the United States as an invaluable contri- j
bution to cotemporaneous History. Mr. Flint clear-1
ly demonstrates among other things, that the Maxi- I
milian Government iu M?xico is firmly established ;
that the people have abandoned Juarez,(whose troops
are said to consist now of but a few bands of guertl
las,) and joined Maximilian ; and that the popular
prejudices in this Country against the establish
ment of an Empire in Mexico are wrong, because in
asserting the Monroe Doctrine we are running coun
terto the wishes of the Mexican people, and taking
from them their exclusive right to settle their own
affairs in their own way and to their own satisfaction.
Facts and documents are presented to stiow that the
Empire is maintained now without? the aid of Franco
and sblely by the Mexican people— the merchant
clergy, and better sort of people generally The
book gives a good insight into the policy which our
own Government has pursued in Mexican affairs, as
well as many facts and statistics of interest aud val
ue.
If the Mexican people have chosen a constitutional J
monarchy as a cure for the anarchy which for so
many years convulsed the Republic, and if their
choice turns out wisely, then who among us dare
say to them ; Put away peace, law, prosperity .jmd
tho Empire, and take back faction, war, lawlessness,
ruin and tho Republic ;
