In presenting this work te the Public, the Pub
lishirs arc actuated by a desire to furnish a cheap
and convenient vehicle for the transmission of light
and instruction to the masses upon a subject con
cerning which, there is both doubt and misappre
hension in the minds of all classes of our country
men. This has arisen as much, perhaps, from the
heretoforo imperfect sources of intelligence concern
ing that unhappy country, as trom the influence ol
our domestic politics upon the questions growing out
of the consideration of its History. The Revolution
through which eurown Country has just passed, has
not been without its influence, though indirectly, up
on the fortunes of the Mexican Nation, and while
we contemplate the wonderful changes wrought in
the Lnited States by five years of srife, we arc nat
urally led to inquire the results achieved by the
revolutions of our Southern .Sister once the Repub
lic and now the Empire of Mexico. Our Author
has answered this inquiry in a manner both satisfac
tory and conclusive, in the Volume we have just is
sued from the I'ress, and we cotnmcnd it to the citi
zens of the I nited States as an invaluable contri
bution to cotemporaneous History. Mr. Flint clear
ly demonstrated mcng other things, that the M ixi
tuilian Gofernmentin Mexico is firmly established ;
that the people have abandoned Ju iruz,(whose troops
arc sail to consist now of but a few bands of guertl
-lif ) and joined .Maximilian ; anil that the popular
prijudices in this Country against the establish
ment of an Empire in Mexico arc wrong, because in
asserting the Monroe ])■ trine we are running cuuu
ferto the wisb n snfthe Mexican people, and taking
from them their exclusive right to settle their own
affairs in their own way and to their own satisfaction.
Facts an 1 documents ire presented to giow that the
Empire is maintained now without the aid of France
and solely by tho Mexican people—tho merchant
clergy, and better sort of people generally The
book gives a good in.-ight into tho policy which our
own Government has pursued in Mexican affairs as
well as many tacts and statistics of interest and val
ue.
If the Mexican people have chosen a constitutional
monarchy as a euro for the anarchy which for so
many yeirs convu'sed the Republic, and if their
choice turns out wisely, then who among us dare
say to them ; Put away peace, law, prosperity and
the Empire, and take back faction, war, lawlessness,
ruin and the Republic ;

S'JIIENCK'S MEDICINES,
TO CURE CONSUMPTION, the system must be
prepared so that the luugs will heal. To accom
plish this, the liver and stomach must first be cleans
ed and an appetite created for good wholesome food
which, by these medicines will be digested properly
and good healthy blood inn !e ; thus building up the
constitution. SCHENCK'S MANDRAKE I'iLLS
cleanse the stoniacbe of all bilious or mucous accu
mulations ; and, by using the Sea YVeed Tonic in
connection, the appetite is restored.
SCHENCK'S PULMONIC SYRUP is nutricious
as well as medicinal, and, by three reme
dies. all impurities are expelled from the system, and
good, wholesome blood made, which will repel al
disease. If patients will take these medicines ac
cording to directions. Consumption very frequently
in its last stage yields readily to their aotion. Take
the pills frequently, to cleanse the liver and stom
ach. It does not follow that because the bowels are
not costive they are not required, for sometimes in
diarrhoea they are necessary. The stomach must be
kept healthy, and an appetite created to allow the
Pulmonic Syrup to act on the respiratory organs
properly ani allay any iiritation. Then all that i
required to perform a permanent cure is, to prevent
taking cola. Exercise about tho rooms as much as
possible, eat all the richest food—fat meat, game
and, in fact, anything tho appetite craves ; but be
particular and masticate well. v6ul2-2ndw ea-oj-,
A HUMBUG-
HOW OFTEN WE HEAR THIS EXPRESSION
trow persons reading advertisements of Patent
Medicines, and in nine cases out ot ten they may bo
righ. It is over 19 years since I introduced my
medicine, the VENKTIIAN LIKIME.NT, to tho public.
I had no money to advertise it. so I left it for sale
with a few druggists and storekeepers through a
small section of the country, many taking it with
great reluctance ; but I told them to let any one
have it, and if it did not do all I stated on my pam
phlet, no one need pay for it. In some stores two or
three bottles wore taken on trial by persons present,
I was, by many, thought crazy, and that would bo
the last they would see of mo. Cut I knew my med
icine was no humbug In about two months 1 began
to receive orders for more Liniment, some calling it
my valuable Liniment, who had refused to sign a
receipt when I left it at their store* Now my sales
are millions of bottles yearly, and all for cash. I
warrant it superior to any other medicine for the
cure of Croup, Diarrhoea, Dysenteiy, Colic. Vomiting
Spasms,, and Sea-sickness, as an internal remedy.—
It is perfectly innocent to take internally, see
oath accompanying each bottle, —and externally for
