A Serenade was given on Saturday evening last
by the band, to Ges. S Tutton Esq. their leader, on
his return from a two week's trip to the West.—
Though owing to the absence of his mellow horn, the
music was but indifferently played, the ..ttempt, was
fully appreciated by their very critical listener. In
a later part of the evening, P. M. Osterhuut Esq.—
a very liberal contributor to the band funds, was

THE STANDARD HISTORY OF THE GRA N D ARMY.
The greatest Work on the War.,
Universally endorsed by ai wy of
ficers and the press, THE AUTHOR
SAYS :
"I design in this volume to record what that Ar
my did and suffered fn ten campaigns and two score
b ittles.
I shall have to celebrate the unswerving loyalty
of this army, thnt oftiines when the bond of military
c< hesion failed, held it, unshaken of fortune, to a
duty self-imposed.
I shall have to follow it through a checkered ex
perience, in a tale commingled of great misfortunes,
great follies and great glories ; but from first to last
it will appear that, amid mmy buffets of fortunes,
through -winter and rough weather," the Army of
the Ptomao never gave up but made a good fight,
and finally reached the goal
Of this drama there will ba no other hero than the
Army of the Potomac itself; for it would seem that
in this war of the People it was decreed there should
arise no imperial presence to become the central fig
ure and cynosure of men's eyes. Napoleon, in an
outburst of haughty eloquence, exclaims that in the
great armies of the Commander was every-
- j thiug. This proud apotheosis has DO application for
I the Army of the Potomac. And one must think—
e seeing it never hadja great, and generally had ined
-1 j iocre commanders—it w.B that it might be said, that
d ; wh-rever it won it owed not to genius, but bought
; with its blood."
e
d | This is the only History of the "Grand
d Army," and no one who lias borne a part
r in its conflicts, or is interested in its grand
j achievements, should be without it.
This work presents a rare chance to make money.
