HEADLEY'S HISTORY OF TIIE GREAT RE
BELLION. The late Rebellion stands ou
peculiar and extraordinary in human events ; ans
the magnifcent scale upon which the- war ha
been conducted, constitute it one of the GRAND
EST AND MOST BRILLIANT CHAPTERS OF
THE WORLD'S HISTORY.
Mr, Hendley, of all writers, is perhaps best qual
ified to portray the stupendous features of th
mighty contest, liis previous works on less mo
mentous themes have placed him in the first position,
as a graphic and poxccrjul pelinea/or of tear scenes
and characters, and the magnitude and grandeur
of the present subject, impart to his pen the fire and
vigor of a yet more exalted inspiration, and furnish
ample scope for the highest exhibition of his peculiar
genius for mililary description. Under his power
erful pen the stirring scones of the War pos3 in re
view with the vividness and distinctness of a present
and living reality; while his great talent for con
densation enables him to embody everything of im
portance in a compass just suited io the public want.
From io otheT source can so clear and eompretien
sire an impression of the grand march of events
bo obtained go easily and agreeably, as from Mr.
Headley's work.
Other Histories have been issued before Granfs
Report and other Official Documents icere submit
ted to the Government, and are therefore unrelia
ble Mr Headley has delayed the completion of
this till those DOCUMENTS so ESSENTIAL to
