THE TAVERN-KEEPER AND RAFT
AVAI.KER.
There vras a fellow once stepped out of the
door ota tavern on the Mississippi.meaning to
walk a mile up the shore to the next tavern.
Jus' at the landing there lay a big
of the regular old fashioned whalers—a raft a
mile !n*:g. Well, the fellow said the raft was
a mile long, and he said unto himself* 'T will
go forth and see the great wonder, and let
mine eyes behold the timber which the hand
of man has hewn." So he g-T at the lower
end, and began to ambulate over the wood in
pretty fair time. Iut just as he walked up
the river, it walked down, both traveling at
about the same rate. When he got to th
end of the sticks, he found they were pretty
near the shore, and in sight of a tavern ; so
he landed and walked straight into the bar
room he had come out of. The general same
ness of things took hitn a little aback, but he
looked the landlord straight in the face, and
Bet tied it in his own way :
"Publican," said he, "are you gifted with
any twin-brother who keeps a similiar sized
tavern, with a duplicate wife, a comporting
wood-pile, and corresponding circus bill, a
mile off frotn here ?"
The tavern-keeper was fontj of fun, and ac
cordingly said it was just so.
"And, publican, have you, among your dry
good, for the entertainment of man and beast
any whiskey of the same size as that of your
brother's ?"
And the tavern man said that, from the ris
ing of the suq to the going down cf the same,
l;e had.
They took drinks, when the stranger - aid :
"Publican, that twn-brother of yours is a
mighty fine man—a very fine man indeed.—
Tsut do you know that I'm afeered he suffers
s good deal with the Chicago diphtheria?"
"And what is that ?" asked the toddy
sticker.
"It is when the truth settles so firm in a
man that it never comes out. Common doc
t rs of the catnip sort call it lying. When I
left your brother's confectionary, there was a
raft at his door, which he swore on his lifi I
was a mile long. Well, publican, I walked
that raft from bill to tail, from his do r to
yourn. Now. I know leg-time, an' I'm just
as good for myself as for a hoss, and better
for that than any man you ever did see. I
always walk a mile in exactly twenty minutes
on agood road, and I'll be busted with an
over-loaded Injun gun if I've been mor'n ten
minutes coming here, stepping over the blam
cd logs at that."— Pacific Month.
Srr.NS THAT FAILED.— We all remember
the story of the inn keeper who became proud
as he prospered, and taking down his sign of
the Ass, put up a portrait of George IV, in
its place, His neighbor immediately raised
the cast off effigy, and "in this sigr he con
quered-" The first landlord, alarmed at the
increasing popularity of his rival, and under
standing the cause, wrote underneath the
grim visage of his Majesty : "This is the real
Ass." But a more ludicrous incident of the
kind is just now told at the expense of the
good Bishop Landaff. lie took up his abode
near the head of Lake Wendermere, where
the principal inn had been known as the
Cock ; hut the landlord, byway of compli
ment to his distinguished neighbor, substitu
ted the Bishop as the sign. An inn* keeper
close by, who had frequently envied mine
host of the Cock ft r his good fortune in se
curing a considerable preponderance of visi
tors, took adventage of the change, and at
tracted many travelers to his house by put
ting up the sign of the COCK. The lan I lord
with the new sign was much discomfi-tted at
6eeirg many of his old customers deposited
at his rival's establishment ; s > bv waj* of
remedy, he put up in large red letters under
the portrait of the Bishop : "This is the old
Cock."
A Goon ONE Somewhere in the outskirts
of Hartford there is a Mission School that
has the reputation of be : ng rather "not>y,"so
much so that those appointed to take charge
cf if generally te-ogn in a. few weeks. Last
Sunday, the school being destitute of a su
perintendent, a prominent manufacturer of
Norwich, Conn, volunteered for the day.—
Having called the school to order, and got
most of them seated, "Boys," said he, mount
ing the platform, "let'a see if we can't have it
still," and he put hitnelf in a quiet posture
for the school to imitate. As there was some
noise, "Boy," said he, "we can have it stil
ler, I know,' —and walking to the front part
of the stage and raising his hand —"Now let's
Bee if we can't hear a pin drop."
All was silence, when a little fellow in the
back part of the room, placing li mself in an
attitude of breathless attention, spike out:
'•Let her drop /"
The stein features of the superintendent
are said to have slightly relaxed.
