Manufacture of Woolen Goods !
CHAPTER 1
The Manufacture of Woolen Goods, both in the
household and in the factories, has become of great
importance on accountofjits forming at present our
principal articles of clothing. The nature of our cli
mate make it nccccssary, and the scarcity of Cotton
has greatly increase! trie value of wool and Fabncks
made from it * and being engaged in the business of
making Clorh and Flannel, and also i oil Carding,
and Cloth Dressing, we have thought a few remarks
with regard to handling Wool, and the proper pro
cess of Manufacture, might be of service to the coun
try, and a benefit to onrselves
The firs t process with the farmer who intends to
make his wool into rolls for spinning ml weav ing
at home, after washing and shearing, is 4 - >r ing the
ualitics. This we do not expect a farmer to J as
erfectly as a regular manufacturer, but by trying
he will approximate towards it, and be amply paid
for the little pains required, by haviDg an even
thread and smoother fabric. The fleece should be
win le and he spread out on a table—the coarsest
wool will be fourd on the skirts of the fleece, and
can ensily be distinguished by looking closely to the
fibre* Two qualities from eadh fleece will perhaps
bo close cnopgh for ordinary purposes, but as the
sheepin our country differ much in their grades of
wool —the coarse pait of one may do to go with the
firer part of another, and thus ranke three or four
quajpfiesiout jbftfte lot If it is going to. the manu
factory vi to marker, the fleece -hould not be torn,
but after removing the tag-locks, should be rolled up
compactly, skin out side. Not less than one pound
oflard, fresh butter or oil should be sent with orery
ten going to the c p ling machine.
The neki'tlwiig of importance is of emir i to he
well carded, for which wc will be entirely responsi
ble . but in (he matter of spinning and veaving, we
have another caution to. add, Unless tho yarn, js
evyjfly twigfceijfSnHl heat Wp evenly Jn the iooia. the
shrink® ufHrfenly 'nLulling—m.ikTog some pla
ces wide and othersn.irmw, and if the finisher suc
ceeds in pressing out the wrincles, the cloth will re
sume its contortion again when made into a gar
nent. ami the mechanic is sometimes wrongfully
hlatqlWMr a coat.s becoming lantern jaffad on e
mauAJwk. It is easily avoided by gijitig 'l a I
wheel tayqual number of turns to a giveu length of
thread drw n out. We find thisdifiieulty VBgrc -.sing
( late .ypar?, and have come to the conclusion that
if ennie of the spinners do not keep better time on
their pjHSM" than on their spinning wheels, we siiould
hate dfnatiluHy to listen to their music.
Ac ewgry moment of labor sbonl 1 be einpfnyed to
the best advantage, and every ounce of material be
appropriated to the best purpose, on account of our
war, to write some other ch ipt#-s ob our
hrtmeh ftf LisincSs after this is read sufficiently to be
remembered, and shall endeavor to do our work
nice enough tor a bnluioral skirt or a duetqr'e eont,-
and maketrowsera shmt enough to last a farmer
through a year's campaign, at least.
