House Burned— The dwelling of J*m.sßiley
bout a mile from this place, was destroyed by fire,
one ereuing last week. It seems thatone of his chil
dren went to tbe cellar for some, potatoes, which
were covered with straw. The lamp upset and com
municated he fire to the straw. Beforo help could
be obtained the house was on fire. All of the fur

The City of Lynn. Mass turns out more boots
nnd shoe 3 than a.iv otuer place of its site in the
world. There is scarcely a man. woman, or child in
that largo and flourishing town not engaged in one
way or another in the manufacture of these cover
ings for the pedal extremities. The high prico of
everything in the line of provisions, and above all
of Rotin from which wax ts made, has caused a
strike among them. Tuey say they cannot STICK to
their last* and make their ends meet. The prov-
Verbial ingenuity of the Yankees has .surmounted
this difficulty by making the boots lower on the an
kle and higher on the price. ? ome of the old sfo k
at the old prices however, can bo found at the
cheap dry goods and fancy store of John Weil
in this place.
The Knickerbocker Magazine— This * :ii
versal favorite, for so many years '-voted exclu
sively to subjects of a literary character, now pro
jtoses to give it a Democratic complex b-n "In pol
itic! it aims to exhibit the true boundari s of the
Federal power as fixed by the Constitution of the
United States ;to uphold the first rights-an 1 prerog
atives of the Federal and State Governments, rnd to
discountenaiice and refute those heretical doctrines
which tend to eonsolidatibi he overthrow of our
Republican liberties." H liile the paces of the
Harptr, Continental, Xorth American Reriew, an 1
a host of other Magazines earnestly devoted to the
new doctrines of Abolition miscegnation a..d other
heresies which promise nothing hut evil to the coun
try, it is proper that the Constitution and the polit
ical theories of Jefferson, Madison, should find a
single supporter among the great array of Serials
published in the country It is worthy of a warm
and zealous support from the Democracy, Let the
truth be disseminated and error will soon quail be
fore it.

REV. ALFRED TAYLOR.
With en Introduction by Professor JOH.X S. HART,
L* 1, I>. t*f Philadelphia. The character and un
folding* of the Sunday school are fast becoming on
element of national history. To a hopeful extent,
this Christian organization moulding the characters
of our children and youth ; uud its impressions on
the minds oft he masses are hardly less potent! 1
and abiding than the teachings <it' the Pulj.P. This
volume isboth tiuiely and suggestive It is a com
plete mirror of the Sunday-school, disclosing its
workings, and giving a graphic insight into the
characteristics of Superintendents.Teat hers, Scholars,
and Sunday-school Orators. Every chapter of the
work is as keen in the delineation of character as
the edge of a beta eld razor. The book will create
astir; and, il' its suggestions are heeded, a reforma
tion. It is a fitting accompaniment to " Our Sun
day-school, and how we Conduct it," by Waldo
Abbot, and both works are an a qu siiioti to the re
ligious literature of th age. We give below a few
items of c tents, the better to give the readers of

The Publishers of THE AUE coulJ easily I'LL their
columns with the unsought and most liberal com
mendations of the press throughout the country; but
they prefer that it should stand altogether upon
claims to public csnfidence, well known and estab
lished. They believe it has acqtiited this reputa
tion by the can lor, fearlessness and independence
with which it has been conducted, through times of
extraordinary confusion of i teas on public subjects,
and b'.'rerly of almost unexampled public trial. It
is now, and will be, as heretofore, the supjKirterof
truly national principles, opposed alike to radical
ism and fanaticism in every form, and devoted to
the maintenance of good government, law and ox
der.
The Publishers of t HE AUE conceive that it thus
renders peculiar services an I lias peculiar claims
ujmn all meu by whom its principles are valued, and
who, by the projier means, look to promote and se
cure the Constitutional restoration of the Uni'jO.—
These can best show their sense of the untiring ef
forts of the publishers, in behals of this grerl and
unparallelled cause, by earnestly sustaining this
paper in all its business relations.

ent Medicines in general, through distrust of their
ingredients and effects, I yet know of no sufficient
reasons why u man clay not testify to the benefits he
believes himself to have received from anv simple
prepara'ion. in the hope that he may thus contribute
to the benefit of others.
I do this the more readily in regard to Hoofland's
Germ-in Bitters, prepared by Dr. C M Jackson, of
ti is city, because I was prejudiced aga est thew'for
many years, under the impression that tbey were
.•hiefly an aicoholic mixture. lam indebted to my
friend Robert Slio maker, Esq.. for the removal of
this prejudice by proper tests, and for en. ouragemeat
to try theui when suffering from great and longc.a
tinued debility. The use of three bottle* f these
Bitters, at the beginning of the pr sent year, was
followed by evident relief, and restoration to a de
gree of bodily an t mental vigor which I had not f c \t
for six months before, and had almost despaired of
i regaining I therefore thank God and uhv friend for
directing ine Ui the use of them,
