SAFE AND WITTY.
One of the old school books used to have a
good story about Cardinal WOIBMV, who was
hurrying to reach a city before the gate was
closed for the night. Meeting a countryman,
he asked if he could probably get in at the
gate. The countryman, enjoying a good joke,
looked at the portly body of the archbishop,
as if estimating its girth, and quietly said :
"I think you can ; a load of hay wont in this
afternoon." Tne following is about as good :
" As a pedestrian tourist," says the Orlean
nuis, ' was lately proceeding towards Tours,
he asked a man who was breaking stones by
the roadside how long it would take him 'o
reach that place ? The man looked at him
without speaking, and then resumed his
woik. The question was repealed wnh the
same result, and at last the traveller walked
on. He had not preceded more than a hun
dred yards when the man called after hiin,
and made a sign for him to return. When
the pedestrian leached the stone breaker, the
latter said to hun :
" It will take you an hour to reach Tours."
" Then why did you not tell me so at first?*'
said the traveller.
" Why," replied the man, it was nccessa
ry for me to see at what rate you walked ;
and from the way you step out, 1 am now
able to say, that you can do the distance in an
hour."
AN ECCENTRIC PHYSICIAN-
A friend relates t<-r ihe Agriculturist, the
following anecdote of a skilful physician, Dr.
M who is si ill practising in Riole Is
land. Ho ha l away of doing things all his
own, and no one Could tell beforehand,
" where he would come out." On one <>c
casion he was called to perferui a very tin
portsnt surgical operation on a young man
living in this country. Arriving there he
found collected a large number of neighbor
ing farmers and others, who had come from
curiosity to witness the operation. He oh
served that the house was scantily furnished,
and other evidences of the poverty of the
family were apparent, and he inquired wbelh
er the mother, a widow, was ready to pan
tile 850 he should charge. She replied that
she could not at present, but he would do
nothing until the money was paid, and ask
ed them if they could not make up the
amount, This was soon done, but not with
out many condemnations of the hard hearted
doctor, who, however, paid no attention to
the remarks, but immediately went <n with
his work, which he performed sucaessfuiiy
As soon a9 it was over, he stepped up to the
mother, and remarking " the buv will need
some things before he gets well." slipped the
SSO into her hand, and was off before he
could hear her thanks, or the l>ud praises of
those who had been just denouncing him as
a grasping miser.
USEFUL CAUTIONS.
Ifa man asks you to go his security, say
" No," and run ; otherwise you may be en
slaved for life, or your wife and children
may spend a weary existence, in want, sick
ness and begrary.
If you find yourself in possession of a
counterfeit note or coin, throw it into the
fire on the instant 3 otherwise you may he
tempted to pass it, and may it to feel
mean therefore as long as you live ; then it
may pass into some man's hands as mean as
yourself, with a new perpetration ol iniquity,
the loss to fail eventually "n some poor
struggling widow whose "ail" it may be.
Never laugh at the mishaps of any fellow
mortal.
Tho very instant that you perceive your
self in a passion, shut your mouth ; this is
one among the best precepts outside of inspi
ration.
Th man who always exicts the last cert
is always a mean ma. 13 there is no " -vicu
ant" in all the " Materia Medica" efficient
enough to " purge" him of his debasement ;
he is beyond drnggery.
Never effect to be "plain" or" bluif
these aro the synonyms of brutabtv and
boorishness. Strch persons are tnflio ing
wounde which neither time n >r medicine can
ever heal.
Never be witty at an ither's expense ; trim
generosity never dwelt in Mich a heart; it
only wants the opportunity to become a
cheat or rogue —Hall's Journal
AN EYE TO BUSINESS.
A legal friend in the west sen us the
following :
Several years ago I was practising 'aw in
one of the many beaut iful towns in Wiscon
sin. One very warm day while seated in
my office at work, 1 was interrupted by the
entrance of a boy, the hon of one < f my cb

a blazing sun, for the purpose t f piocuring a
bible. He had been told, he said, that thete
was a place there where they gave them
away to people had no money ; he said
he had no money and was very anxious to
get one of the good books and asked me to
go with him to the place where they were
kept. Anxiouß to encourage him in his ear
ly piety I left the brief on which I was ei -
gaged, and went over with him to ihe stand
of an old Presbyterian deac >n who had tie
moch coveted books iti charge. I introduced
him to the deacon telling him the circum
stanceß. He praised the boy very hishlv ;
was delighted to see a young man so early
seeking after the truth, &c , and presented
him with the be6t bound bible in his collec
tion. Bubby put it i n his pocket, was start

disease, low living, disordered digestion fro*

the venereal infection. Whatever be its origiw

stomach and bowels, derangements which pro

plaints, on the skin, eruptive and cutanebu#
affections. These all having the same origin,
require the same remedy, viz. purification and
invigoration of the blood. Purify the blood,
and these dangerous distempers leave yoR.
With feeble, foul, or corrupted blood, you eaq
not have health ; with that •' life of the flesh'
healthy, you canoot have scrofulous disease.
Ayer's Saraaparilla
is compounded from the most effectual anti
dotes that medical science has discovered for
this afflicting distemper, and for the cure of the
disorders it entails. That it is far superior to
any other remedy yet devised, is known by all
who have given it a trial. That it does com
bine virtues truly extraordinary in their effect
upon this class of complaints, is indisputably
Eroven by the great multitude of publicly
nown and remarkable cures it has made of
the following diseases : King's Evil tf
Glandular Swellings, Tumors, Erup
tions, Pimples, Blotches and Sores, Ery
sipelas. Bose or St Anthony's Fire. Salt
Rneum, Scald Head, Coughs from tu
berculous deposits in the Tongs, White
Swellings, Debility, Dropsy, Neuralgia,
Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Syphilis and
Syphilitic Infections, Mercurial Diseases,
Female Weaknesses, and, indeed, the whole
series of complaint* that arise from imppity
of the blood. Minute reports of individual
cases may be found in ATER'S AMERICA*
ALMANAC, which is furnished to the druggists
for gratuitous distribution, wherein may bo
learned the directions for its use, and some of
the remarkable cures which it ha* made when
all other remedies had failed to afford relief.
Those cases are purposely taken from all sec
tions of the country, in order that every reader
may have access to some one who can speak to
hitn of its benefits from personal experience.
Scrofula depresses the vital energies, and thus
leaves its victims far more subject to disease
and its fatal results than are healthy constitu
tions. lleuce it tends to shorten, and does
greatly shorten, the average duration of human
life. The vast importance of these considera
tions has led us to spend years in perfecting a
remedy which is adequate to its cure. This
we now offer to the public under the name of
Arm's SARSAPARILLA, although it is com
posed of ingredients, some of which exceed the
best of Sarsiparilla in alterative power. By
its aid yon may protect yourself from the suffer
ing and danger of these disorders. Purge out
the foul corruptions that rot and fester in the
blood; purge out the causes of disease, and
vigorous health will follow. Bv its peculiar
virtues this remedy stimulates the vital func
tions, and thus expels the distempers which
lurk within the system or burst out on aay
part of it.
We know the public have been deceived h>
many compounds of Sarsapmritta, that promise
much and did nothing; but thev will neither
deceived nor disappointed in this. It* virtue
have been proven by abundant trial, and there
remains no question of its surpassing excellence
for the cure of the afflicting diseases it is in
tended to reach. Although under the same
name, it is a verv different medicine from any
other which has been before the people, and is
far more effectual than any other which has
ever l*;en available to them.
