Return of the Militia.—The company which
[left Mehoopany, in this county, a few days since, at
ithe call of the Governor for the defence of the State (
Ire turned to their homes on Tuesday last; all danger
,of an invasion of our State being now passed, their
services were no longer needed.
Veterson's Magazine, for October, is on our ta
ble. It is by far the japest of the Ladies'Maga

Robbery.—A daring and successful robbery was
committed at the houses of Mrs. J 11. Bogart and
Jacob Myer, Esq., last evening. The thief entered
the sleeping rooms of the occupants, and .took two or
three valuable watches, aud such money as tliey car
ried about their poisons, which we were informed,
amounted to one hundred dollars. The entrance
was made through upper windows by means of a
ladder.

Auction tills Evening.—The entire remaining
stock of Dry Goods, Crockery, Hardware. Hats and
Caps, Boots and Shoes, belonging to S. D. Bacon, will
be sold at Auction, at the store-house of D. A. Bard
well, opposite C. M. Koon's grocery, in this Borough
Sale to commence this (Wednesday) evening. Thos.
Young, the celebrated auctioneer, of Bingbamton,
will offer the goods. Persons wishing good bargains
should not fail to attend. Terms made known at
commencement of sale.

Tile Draft.—The draft which has been post
poned for a number of times, it is now said will cer
tainly take place to-morrow, the 25th inst. The num
ber advertised by the Commissioners, to be drafted
from each township, is as follows:

ioryville station, has been projected by some of our
cit'zens, and only needs to be taken hold of by some
one who feels aninterest in the matter, to be maden
entirely successful. The subscriptions forthat purpose,
have thus far, been very liberal, and by a little effort
| all the funds necdel could be obtained. With n
! line connecting with the other great lines of the coun
try, the people of this county would be comparatively
I " out of the woods." Let the project go on.

I large Fish.—Mr. Azor Stemples of Wall's Ho
tel, while out spearing a night or two since, caught a
Bass measuring, from tip to tip, two feet and eight
inches, and weighing over eleven pounds. This may
l>e pronounced " a fish story" by some of our " land"
lublers ' We saw the monster measured, and can
vouch for the correctness of that part of it ourself. It
is. perhaps, needless to add that this fish will lie serv
ed up in the highest style of the culinary art for the
guests of that hotel.

PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS, by the laws of this Commonwealth,
it is made ''the duty of the Sheriff of every
county to give notice of the general elections, by pub
lications in one or more newspapers of the county, at
least twenty days before the election," and to enum
erate therein '-the officers to be elected," and to des
ignate the place at which the election is to be held."
Therefore, I, LEVI II STEPHENS, High Sheriff of
Wyoming county, do hereby make known and pro
claim to the qualified electors of Wyoming county
that a GENERAL ELECTION will beheld through
out said county, on
Tuesday, the \Ath day oj October,
being the second Tuesday in said month, at the sev
eral districts within the county, to wit :

One person for President Judere of the 2Gth Judi
cial District, composed 0 f the Counties of Columbia,
Sullivan and Wyoming.
One person for Congressman, of the 13th Cnn
gressionnl District, composed of the C unties of Brad
lord, Wyourtig. Sullivan. Columbia, and Montour.
One person for State Senatorial the 9th Senatorial
District, com pus. <1 ot the Counties of Brad tori, Sus
quehanna, Wyoming, and Siillivin.
Two persons for liepresentatires , in the Counties of
Wyoming, Sullivan, Montour And Columbia.
One person for County Commissioner, of the Coun
ty of Wyoming.
One person for County Treasurer of the County of
Wyoming.
One person for District Attorney of the County
Wyoming.
One (icrson for County Auditor of the County of
Wyoming.
One person for Coroner of the County of Wyoming
It is further directed that the meeting of the return©
judges at the Court house in Tunkhannock, to make
out the general returns, shall be on the first Friday
succeeding the general election, which will be the
seventeenth dav of October.
And in and by the said act, I am further directed
to give notice that every person, excepting justices of
the jicnee, who shall hold anvofiioe or apjsiintiiicnt of
profit or trusi under the Government of the United
States, or of this State, or of any city, or incorporated
district whether a commissioned officer or otherwise a
subordinate officer or agent, who is or shall be em
ployed under the legislative or executive, or judiciary
department of this .State, or of any incorporated dis
trict, an J also that every member of Congress or of
the select or common council of any city, commission
ers of any incorporated district, is, by law, incapable
of holding or exercising at the same time the office or
appointment of Judge, inspector or clerk of any elec
tion of this Commonwealth, and that no inspector,
judge or any officer of any such election shall bo elig
ible to any then to be voted for.
In pursuance of an Act of the General Assembly of
the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, eniitled " An
Act relating totim Elections of this Commonwealth,"
passed the 2d dav of July, A. I).. 1829,
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN,
"That the Inspectors and Judges chosen as afore
said, shall meet at the respective places appointed lor
holding tho election in the districts to which they re
spectively belong, before nine o'clock on tho im rn'ng
of the second Tuesday in October, in each and every
year, and each of said Inspectors shall appoint one
clerk who shall bo n qualified xoter of such district.
" In ease the person who shall have received the
sr ooml highest number of votes for Inspectors shall
not attend on the day of election, then the person who
shall have received the second highest number of
votes for Judge at the preceding election shall act as
Inspector in his place. And in ease the person who
shall have received the highest number of votes for
Inspector shall not attend, the person elected Judge
shall appoint an Inspector in his place; aud in case
the jierson elected Judge shall not attend, then the
Inspector who received the highest number of votes
shall appoint a Judge in his place, and if any vacan
cy shall continue in the Board for the space of one
hour after the time fixed for tho opening of the elec
tion of the qualified voters of the township, ward or
district for which such officer shall have been elected,
the persons present at the place of election, shall elect
one of their number to fill such vacancy.
" In all cases where the names of a person claim
ing to vote vote is not to be found on the list furnish
ed by the Commissioners and Assessors, or his right
to vote whether found therein or not is objected to by
any qualified citizen, it shill be the duty of the In
spectors to examine sueh person on oath, as to his
qualifications, and if he claims to have resided within
the State for one year or more, his oath shall be suf
ficient proof thereof; but he shall make proof by at
least one competent witness who shall bo a qualified
elector that he has resided within the district for
more than ten days next immediately preceding
the election, and shall also himself swear that his
bonafide residence, in pursuance of his lawful calling
is within the district, and that he did not move into
the district for the purpose of voting therein.
" Every person qualified as aforesai I, and who
shall nmke due proof, if required of his residence and
payment of taxes as aforesaid, shall be admitted to
vote in the township, ward, or district in which ho
shall reside.
"If any person or persons shall make any bet or
wager upon (ho result of ar,y election iu this Com
monwealth or shall offer to make any such bet or
wager either by verbal proclamation thereof, or by
any written or printed advertisement, challenge ot in
vite any person or persons to make such a bet or wa
ger, upon conviction thereof, he or they shall forfeit
aßd pay three times the amount so bet or offered to
bet.
" If any person not by law qualified shall fraudu
lently vote at any election within this Commonwealth,
or being otherwise qualified, shall vote out of his
proper district, or if any person knowing the want of
sueh qualification shall aid or procure such person to j
vote, the peison or persons offending shaii on convic
tion, be confined not exceeding two hundred dollars
and be imprisoned for a term not exceeding three
months.
_" H nny person shall vote nt more than one election
district,or otherwise fraudulently votemore than once on
the same day, or shall fraudulently fold and deliver
to the Inspectors two tickets together, with the in- I
tention to illegally vote, or shall vote the same, or if
any per.- u shall advise or procure another so to do,
he or they so offending shall, on conviction, be fined
in any sum not less than fifty, nor more than five
luin lred dollars, and be imprisoned for any term not
less than three, nor more than four months.
"It any person not qualified to vote in this Com
monwealth agreeably to law [excepting the sons of
qualified citizens,] shall appear at any place of elec
tion for the purpose of issuing tickets or influencing
citizens qualified to vote, he shall on conviction, for
feit and pay any sum not exceeding one hundred dol
lars for every sueh offence, and, and be imprisoned
for any term not exceeding three months.
"No person shall be permitted to vote at any elec
tion as aforesaid, other than a white freeman of the
age ot 21 years or more, who shall have resided in this
State at least one year, and in the election district
where he effers to vote, at least ten days immediately
preceding sueh election, and within two years have
paid a Stato or county tax which shall have been as
sessed at least ten daj-s before election. But a citi
zen of the Inited States, who has previously been a
qualified voter of this State, and removed therefrom
and returned, and who shall have resided in the elec
tion district, and paid taxes aforesaid, shall be en
titled to vote after residing in this State six months,
Provided, That the white freemen citizens of the Un
ited States, between the ages of 21 and 22 years, and
having resided in this State one year, and in the clec
tfon district 10 days as aforesaid, shall bo entitled to
vote, although they shall not have paid taxes.
"No persons shall be permitted to vote whose name
is not contained in the list of taxable inhabitants
furnished by the Commissioners as aforesaid unless
first he produces a receipt for the payment witliin two
years of a State or County tax assessed agreeably to
the Constitution, and give satisfactory evidence eith
er (>n his or 011 the affirmation of another, that he has
paid sueh tax, or on failure to produce a receipt shall
make oath to the payment thereof; or second, if he
claims a right to vote by being an elector between
the age of 21 and 22 years, he shall depose on oath
or affirmation that lie has resided in the Stato at
least one year next before his application, and make
such proof of residence in his district as required by
this Art, and that he does verily believe from the ac
count given him that he is of the aforesaid age, and
give such other evidences as is required by this Act,
whereupon the name of the person so admitted to vote
shall bo inserted in the alphabetical list by the In
spectors, and a note made opposite thereto by writing
the word 'tax,' if he shall be admitted to vote by
reason of having paid a tax, of the word ' age,' if he
shall be permitted to vote on account of his age, and
in either case the reason of such vote shall be called
out to the clerks, who shall mark in the list of voters

If any person shall prevent or attempt to prevent
am' officer of an election under this act from holding
such election or use or threaten any violence to any
' such officer, or shall interfere with hiin in the exe c -
tionof his duty or shall block up or attempt to bio k
I the window or avenue or any window where the same
may be holden, cr shall riotously disturb the peace
at such election, or shall use or practice any intiini
dation threats, force, or violence, with design to in
fluence unduly or overawe any elector to prevent him
j from voting or to restrain the freedom of choice, such
1 ers'Ui on conviction shall be fined in any sum not ex
ceeding five hundred dollars, and be imprisoned for
anytime not less than one, nor more than twelve
months; and if it shall be shown to the Court where
the trial of sueh offence shall be had, that the person
so offending was not a resident of the city, ward, dis
trict or township, where the offence was committed,
and not entitled to a vote therein, then, on convic
tion, he shall be sentenced to pay a fine of not less
than one hundred dollars and be imprisoned not less
than six months, nor more than two years.
Agreeably to the prov'sions of the sixty-first sec
tion of said Act, every general and special election
shall be opened between the bonis of eight and ten
in the forenoon, and continue without interrup
tion or adjournment until seven o'clock in the even
iug, when the {Kills shall be closed.
Pursuant to the provisions contained in the 76th
section ot the Act, the Judgesof the aforesaid dis
tricts. respectively shall Like charge of the certificate
or return of the election of their respective districts,
and produce them at a meeting of one Judge from
each district, at the Court House, in the Borough of
f uiikhannoek, on the third day after the day of elec
tion, being the 17th day of October next, then and
there, to do and perform the duties required by law
ot said Judges. Also, that where a Judge, by sick
ness or unavoidable accident, is unable to attend said
meeting of Judges, then the certificate, or return,
aforesaid, shall bo taken charge of by ono of the In
spectors or Clerks of election of said district, who
shall do and perform the duties required of sa*d
Jndge unable to attend.
Also, that in the 21st section of said Act, it is en
acted that " when two or uioro counties shall com
pose a district for the choice of a member or mem
bers of the senate of this Commonwealth, or the
House of Representatives of the United States or of
this Commonwealth, or President Judge, the Judges
of the election in each county having met as afore
said, the Clerks shall make out a fair statement of
all the votes which shall have been given at such
election, within the county, for every person voted
for, as such member fir members, or President Judge,
which shall be signed by said Judges and attested by
the Clerks; and one of the said Judges shall take
charge of said certificate, and shall produce the
same at a meeting of one .Judge from each county in
such district as is or may be appointed by law for
the purpose, which meeting shall be held the scveuth
day after the election."
