Notice.—The Mehoopnny Military Company en
lolled on the 13th inst, will meet at Bender's Hotel,
in Meboopany village, at 2 o'clock, p. m., Saturday.
Sept. 20th, 1562, for organization.
Sewing Machine. Mrs. C. T. Marsh is tho
ngent in this county lor the sale of Singer A Go's.
Family Sewing Machine, which wo noticed last week
Her advertsement will probably appear in our next
issue. Those who wish a good Machine should buy
no other. Mrs. Marsh is fully prepared to instruct
any one purchasing, in the proper method of using it,-
and will at any time exhibit specimens of its work.
The Examination.—The examinations of per
sons claiming to be exempt from the draft, which has
been going on for the past two days, has attracted to
our town large numbers of the maimed, blind, and
crippled citizens of our county. But a few only of
the number examined by the Surgeon, will,
probably be declared as unfit for military duty. Let
every man, therefore, be prepared for the draft, which
Is now said to bo inevitable on the 25th, to which
day it has now been extended by Gov. Curtin.
The Republican Conference. —The Republi
can Conference, which met at this place on Wednes
day last, as was prearranged, placed that avowed ab
olitionist, George Landon, on the ticket for Congress.
The friends of Mr. Tracy, whom the anti-Wilmot par
ty of Bradford County, had placed in nomination, ap
peared in full force and claimed a voice in the Con
ference They wera unceremoniously " kicked out,"
and given to understand that they must " lap salt" at
tho behests of " King David" and his apostle, George
Godey for October, has been received by us ;
and besides nearly 100 pages of reading matter, re
ceipts, Ac., it contains an original piece of music, and
seventy-four engravings, including a large double
page colored fashion plate Ladies who
" Keep up with the times and fashions "
always prefer Godey. The Lady's Book is furnished
to single subscribers for S3. By an arrangement
made with the publisher we will engage to furnish
the Book and the Democrat for one year, to any of
our lady friends for 53.50. Single subscribers will in
this way have tho benefit of the lowest club rates.
Well Done, Meslioppen I—The citizens of Me
ehoppen, from which it was ascertained that eighteen
more men were needed, have taken the matter in
hand, and by private subscriptions made up a bounty
of about 870 each, to recruits which have been raised
to fill its quota and save that township from tho draft.
These volunteers passed through our place on Mon
day last, on their way to the tented field. They dc
sign joining Co. B, of the 52J Regiment Other town
ships liable to n draft could, by following their ex
ample, save themselves from the draft and lighten
tho burthen, which, in many cases of men with fam
ilies t to support, and business to attend to, would be
severe. For our part, while we feel that our friends
and relatives now in tho field need help; we
think it can be afforded by voluntary enlistments, and
that a dratt can and should be entirely avoided.
New Coal Field.—During a late visit to Du
shore, in Sullivan County, we obtained from Messrs.
Jackson A Mylert, a specimen of Coal, mined by them
a short distance from that place ; which, from its ap
pearance, we judged to bo of very superior qualit}'
It it Semi-Anthracite, and is said to be superior for
many, if not all purposes, to tho pure Anthracite
Tho vein opened by these gentlemen, is eleven feet
thick, and therefore yields coal to an almost unlimit
ed amount. Arrangements are now made by them
to furnish it in any quntities desired, at the bed.—
Tho specimen above mentioned, can now bo seen at
our office. This field is said to be very large, and to
extend somewhat into Forkston Township in this
County ; where, we are informed, there are several
■outcropings, and that a vein of several feet in thick
ness has been discovered. The exhaustless stores of
long hidden treasure in that heretofore neglected re
gion of country, will, we doubt not, ere long, attract
thither the wealth and energy of capitalists; and
those solemn old hills may yet be lit up by the lires of
the furnace, and resound with the shrill whistle of the
iron-horso as he plunges on through the vallies, bear
ing their treasures on to the distant mart.
