premium which is put In all oratori

upon perfection of style Is respon
sible for the close paraphrasing
which students come to adopt in pre
paring themselves. Originality, saith
our deponent, it not taken Into ac
count in "the public estimation nor
in the decisions of the judges, and
originality being immature and with
out polish does not even receive hon
orable mention. And so it happens
that high school girls give as their
own, with the encouragement of
school principals and to the gratifica
tion of their parents am friends, es
says and orations that would cost
experienced literary workers hours
of labor. The college orator to win
must rank uilh Jlillis and (juusaulii.4
in every modern contest, and fur
surpass in finish nine out of ten of
the great public speakers of the
country, from President Jloosevclt

of colleges should inaugurate a ref
ormation in the standards of college
orutory. At leust CO per cent, of
the award of thu judges should be
for originality and vigor of thought
and treatment, the other 0 per cent,
to be apportioned to stylo and deliv
ery. The unci ion of what is mil

would then never confront the young
collvgiau of talent, who cherishes un
ambiliou to exxel iu the competition.
