Gen. Lloyd Wheaton, whose frank

stirred up a number of senatorial crit

tically without exception the men who
have served under him, whom they
fondly call "Dad" Wheaton, would
fight for him to the last ditch against
any odds. Even among the general of
ficers of the United States army, in
cl uding so ninny men of dauntless cour
age and splendid character, there are
few who rank w ith Wheaton in person

In appearance he is the Ideal soldier,
tall ami straight as a pine tree. His
thick hair is jet black and the lower
part of his face is covered with n black
beard, set off by a pair of long and
fiercely-pointed black mustaches. On
horseback especially he looks the part

'Old Dad,'" and then rushes into the
fight the bi-r bay horse, topped by the
hg, fierce mail, with his black beard,
aud all is over but the shouting.
Enlisted men returned from service
in the islands tell all torts of little
stories of Gen. Wheaton. For instance,
there was the nitfht after the landing
at San Fabian. Six punboats, says the
Chicago Tribune, had gone down the
const to cover the landing of n lot of
men under Gen. Wheaton, who were
loaded on a couple of army transports.
While the gunbiBits shelled the town
Wheaton got his men into launches
nnd other small boats nnd waited for
the first chance to get ashore. Once or
twice his eagerness led him to push
ahead within range of the gunboats'
fire, nnd each time he had to face about
nr.d retire, much to the amusement of
the men, bobbing about on the swell in
their little tionti. Finally the party
landed, under a hot fire from the insur
gents, nnd rushed the town. After
pickets hnd been thrown ont nnd nil
arrangements made for ptinrdinff
Bffnlnst ft night attack, Gen. Wheaton
started to turn In, with the Idea of
catching a few hours' Bleep. He nnd
his orderly went Into a native house
on the square and opened the door
lending Into the corner room. As they
did so a couple of privates, who had
already lain down to sleep on the floor,
rose speedily, came to attention, sa
luted nnd started to lenve the room.
"ITere you ! " ronred "Old Dad," in h Is
terrifying voice, "you boys need sleep
just ns much ns I do. Lie down ngain
and go to sleep."
So the commanding general and a
couple of privates went to sleep side
by side on the floor. But early In the
morning, before any one else was
awake, Gen. Whenton got up and went
out all alone on a reconnoitering tour.
Tie closed the door, and It locked be
hind him with a spring lock. Several
times during the night stragglers hnd
come pounding on the door, and hnd
been ordered awny by the somewhat
sulphuric orderly. It happened thnt
the orderly had just got into a sound
sleep when the general returned and
knocked for admission. The orderly,
who hnd no idea thnt Gen. Whenton hnd
gone out, woke up hot and angry.
With all the resources of his pic
turesque rocnbulnry he evrsed the;
mnn who hnd disturbed him and or
dered him to go away under awful pen
alties. "Now, you clear out of here
and let us sleep, or I'll com out and
kick your head off!" he roared. .
"All right, sergeant," sounded the
deep voice of "Old Dad," "all right, I'll
clear out. But won't you please let

I had nervous indigestion and a
general derangement of the entire
system. It had been a continual
torture for 12 years. My blood be
came very poor and at times my
toe and finger nails would be di
seased. After eating I would sit in
a chair and put my feet on some
thing to keep them from swelling,
and at times would take ofi my
miser shoes for they I had. When
ever I experience anything to re
mind me of past aches I cannot be
too elated to tell what Ripans
Tabules have done for me. I still
take one now and then, because I
know how bad 1 have been. They
were just what I noticed.
The fivecent packet is enough for an ordin
ary occasion. The family bottle, Sixty cents,
contains a supply for a year.
