take shelter under a locust during a
thunder shower. The tree is planted,
too, in groves 100 feel or more from
nouses and farm buildings, under the
Impression that it draws the ii;:ht
ii i ii ir. and thus protects tiie l uildings.
In tin- rural mind the locust in better
than a lightning rod. This extensive
planting of the locust probably ex
plains why it is so often hit by litflit
niny. The tree has many good quail'
ties, a.-idc from its fancied one as a
lightning arrester, and it has become
so frequent in Ohio and western
Pennsylvania that the lightning can
not well help striking it.

daughter of (leu. Grant Princess Can
taousene finds every door open to her.
Her famous grandfather is the one
American that all Europe Knows, and
the only one they recognize as any
