The days of the Penna. canal arc
now numbered and soon the famous
old waterway will be abandoned for
ever. Manufacturers and others
who have been using the water have
been notified to look elsewhere for
their supply. The canal, which was
built by the Stale, came in possess
ion of i he P. R. R. Company by
purchase in I860. The Penna. can
al and its branches consists of 1 1 1
miles of navigable canal, with a
width of water line of 52 feet, ex
tending from Columbia, Lancaster
County, to Northumberland, thence
to Luzerne County, and from Nor
thumberland to Loyal Lock, near
Williamsport. General Isaac J.

Louis Thomas of Benezette was
here attending his sister's funeral,
Mrs. (Jilt. Mr. Thomas was a for
mer resident of this place, but for a
number of years has resitled else
where.
Savilla E. (iift, daughter of
Benneville and Polly Thomas was
bern March 20, 1848, and died
April 10, 1901 aged 51 years ami
18 days. She was a member of a
family of ten; five preceded her to
the Spirit world and '6 brothers and
2 sisters remain to mourn her loss.
She was married to Austin Gift Jan.
7, 1868 by Rev. Shindel. The
union was blessed with nine chil
dren, Sallie J. who died at the age
of 17 years; Mary J., married to
John Sterner, Sunbury; K. Wilson,
married to Irene Doison, Blooms
burg; Franklin C, Ix)ttie I., Maude
A., Anna N., Roswell A. and Clark
T. residing at home. Interment
took place at Paxton ville Friday at
