Inasmuch as Bryan and his friends, according
to the very latest accounts from the vicinity of
the Platte, have determined to keep up the fight four
years more, we lieg leave to propose three cheers
for Brvau. Twice he has been beaten, and he was
weaker this year than four years ago. And mean
while he can "lecture" at the same olJ price.
In Lincoln, Nebraska, Bryan lost his home
precinct by a vote of almost two to one, and the
same was also the ease in JSInomingtou, Illinois,
where A dial Stevenson voted. But McKiuley

The ChineseGovernmentis having pretty hard
lines nowdays. The powers have not only de
manded indemnity, but insist that the Chinese
must erect monuments to the memory of the Christ

the same.
The New York Presbytery, the Philadelphia
Presbytery and the Carlisle Presbytery have all
decided against revision, and that the Westminster
Confession, with its doctrine of predestination, is
good enough to remain as the Creed ofthe Pres

seem to have mel with much favor amoung the
older Presbyteries probably because they believe
in letting well enough alone.

High Masonic Bodies
WILLIAMSPOUT will, in a very short
time, have become a prominent center of
Masonic activity. Iast January a Iodge of Per
fection, Scottish Kite, was instituted there, and has
had such a successful career that the higher Mas-
Onlc authorities Were moved to hxik with favor
upon a request preferred that stil I higher functions
be conferred uhii the Williamsport organization. 1
It is now offically announced that it has been de
cided to grant dispensation to the lodge to confer,
in addition to the degrees from 1 to 14, the de
grees conferred by a council, 15 and L6; thorn con
ferred by a chapter, 17 and IS; anil those con
ferred by a consistory, 11) to 32, inclusive. There
is but one higher degree, the thirty-third, which
is conferred only by the national organization.
In due time, it is expected; these dispensations
will be supplemented by charters, creating a
council, chapter, and consistory there, to exist per
manently. The importance that attaches to these
bodies in Masonic circles is evident at n glance,
and cannot fail to make Williamsport conspicu
ous in more than one direction, to the decided ad
vantage of the town. At present there arc live
consistories in the State at Pittsburg, Philadel
phia, Harrisburg, Bloomsburg, and Coudersport.
no NOT FORGET THE LAW
UNDER" a recent law of Pennsylvania,
teachers ofthe public schools are charged
with the performance of a public duty not even
second to that of education of their pupils.
Knowing their opportunities and believing in their
intelligence and public Bpirit, a sovereign Legisla
ture ban instructed them to act in harmony with
the local Hoards of Health in the quick sup
pression of all contagious diseaces,
This duty may briefly be told. In the per-
fomance of their tegular work the teachers fre
quently obtain first information of the outbreak
of contigious diseases in their respective com
munities. Instances an; upon record in which
they were aware ofthe prevalence of diphtheria
many days before, the fact was reported to be the
Boards of Health. Either through carelessness,
favoritism or other cause, the attending phvsicians
tailed to report the cases, although they were a
matter f school gossip. The request of the State
is that teachers shall themselves notify the several
boards of the existence of such diseases the instant
that knowledge becomes theirs.
Surely there is nothing unreaonable in that re
quest. The teachers, no less thau other citizens,
desire the t 'notion ofthe public healtli, aml le
ing a position where they can often ascertain the
facts before any one, ought to take it as one
of the highest duties of their profession to com
ply with the provisions ofthe law.
