Eby, Selinsgrove. Letter from C. R Spangler. f Upper Strabbubg, .Pa, Sept 11, 1899. DEAR Sik: As I am run out ot a Snyder county paper for some time and woidd like to he informed alniirt the news of our former place of living, I concluded to le a sulr-scriln-r to your paper, to furnish it. I am .-till in the lumber business, am kept busy on account of rush ing orders on car building and build ing wharfs along the coast, for which I have furnished 5 carloads oak logs ranging in size from 'JO in. in di ameter 12 feet longto 24 inches 24 feet lone;. Am cjettin -lit out here here in a course of about a year when 1 expect to open a tract in W. Va. Times are middling fair and pro mising lor the future. Your Friend, ('. R. Spangler. Sentenced to Work on the Road. Judge Taylor, ot Washington county, recently sentenced a numb er of prisoners under the provisions of an act passed at the last session of the Legislature, permitting convict labor on public roads. So far as is known he is the first judge in Penn sylvania to impose sentence under this new law. The prisoners sen tence! had all entered pleas of guilty or nolle contendere to indictments and business was disposed of in quick order. It is probable no more male prisoners from aslnngton county will le sent to the Allegheny county workhouse, as the act referred to al lows comity prisoners to be put to work eight hours per day except Sundays and holidays and the law rives preference to the improvement of public thoroughfares, and roads connecting directly with the county seat must receive whatever benefits arise in through the operation of the law.
