SIZE OF SUGAR BEETS
Ybe Small Kind Are Richest la la-
eaarlae Matter aad the Meet Prof
itable (or the Grower.
At a discussion upon augur beets re
cently among tbomembera of a Wiscon
sin farmers' institute Prof. VV. A. Hen
ry, dean of the Wisconsin agricultural
college, said, concerning the eize of
beets: ",The best sugar becta weigh
about two pounds each. Do not try to
grow great, largo beeta, thinking they
are tbo best. Years ago when. I wus
looking up the beet sugar question in
California I had a conversation with
some of the officials of the Southern
Paciflo Railroad company in tlieir office
in Son Francisco. I was urging upon
them the importance of beet sugar pro
duction in California. Col. Crocker, the
leader, showed much indifference, say
ing that he liadi lost $30,000 in trying to
promote this very enterprise. I told
him that that was not necessarily a
reason why beeteugar production could
not yet be profitable. Later on in our
conversation, when talking about Cali
fornia's wonderful productions, he said
that in his experiments he bad grown
beets that weighed 20. or 30 pounds each.
As soon as he told we this, I replied:
'There, Col. Crocker, is one of the rea
sons your factory failed. You thought
lattfc beets were good beeta, when in
truth they are poor beets, and helped
wreck your factory. You should have
tried to produce small beets, but many
to the acre; and such, if grown proper
ly, would have been rich in sugar, and
these would have brought you success
Instead of failure."'

Many old soldiers now feel the
effects of the hard service they en
dured during the war. Mr. Qeo. S.
Anderson, of Rossville, York county,
Penna., who saw the hardest kind of
service at the front, is now fre
quently troubled with rheumatism.
"I had a severe attack lately," he
says, "and procured a bottle of
Chamborlain's Pain Bnlin. It did
so much good that I would
like to know what you would charge
me for oue dozen bottles." Mr.
Andurson wanted it both for his
own use ana to supply it to his friend
and neighbor, as every family should
have a bottle of it in their home,
not only for rheumatism, but lame
back, sprains, swellings, cuts, bruhes
and burns, for which it is unequall
