When The Mistress Is "Lady " In the May Jjitdie Home Journ al, Ktlwartl J5ok notes that "the college yv now nearing its clone has a nignifinint inijMirtance in the tact tlmt during it tlie higher eduea tioii ot the young woman has shown a strong domestic; trend. This has Ixi-ii true of nearly all the important women V col leges t h mi igliout the land. It is true that the field hasonlybeen entered. Hut the begining has liecii made, and the domestic course has proven, in every instance heard from the most jxtpular innovation of re cent years. There is only one true solution of theservant-girl problem, and it must Ik; shared, part and jwirt each ; by the servant and mistress. JJefore we can haveintel ligent service in our homes we must have domestic training-schools. 1 Iere and there in our country these schools are springing up, and they will multiply fast when their neces sity and results are better under stood and seen. Well-etjiiipped training-schools will produce well ejuipjed servitx', and domestic ser vice will, through their influence, Utxiiue an art and a profession. Hut while the servant is undergoing her domestic training, it is equally necessary that the mistress should become Ix'tter acquainted with the domestic arts so that she may intelligently direct, where the other intelligently works. These two must go together: the one with out the .other is not enough. If the girl of to-day exjnicta, when sheisa wife, that her servant sliall do her work in a comj)ctent manner, she as the mistress, must be competent to direct. She roust herself understand the 'work she asks her maid to do." Grapes for Coughs and for Singers. Keefer attorney and gives his hand and seal to the foregoing as his act and deed. A. S. TayIjOR. April 11, 1S98. Notary Public. Filed April 12, 1898 ot 4 P. M. Thcahove declaration is accompanied by a letter as follows : Washington, April 1898. llocorder of Deeds: The enclosed Declaration I would like simply to have placed on your records. The heirs of Joseph Hall are making endeavor to get the estate proiierly settled up and us a timely warning, I would like to have the iapcr go on record. The "Ilevive Greyhounds" is a motto from one of the old crests of the family and it is a request that it he not left out. Respectfully, . Joseph 1. Keefek A slip containing the following printed notice accompanied the letter. From lite Washington Pout, June IS, ISOi. The recurrence of "Flag Day" last week brought to mind to Mr. Joseph I. Keefer the planting of the American flag n Alaskan soil. Mr. Keefer accompanied the Seward State Department expedition to Alaskain 18(7, as aid-de-camp to Capt. T. K. Ketchum. The flag that was unfurled as Alaska was officially taken possession of was the first ever planted in Russian America. Supposing thix bit of historical hunting to have been lost sight of during the intervening years. Mr. Keefer who is last survivor of the expedition, instituted a search last week to ascertain its fate, it jxrasible. Greatly to his satisfaction, the Hag was found inalmx Ix-lmid the orignal Declaration of Independence, in the State Department Building. The flag is not on exhibition, w hich probably accounts for the fuct that it has jassed out of the memory of all but the man who was on the sjwt when its unfolding colors proclaimed the presence and domina tion of Uncle Sam in that far away region.
