Dutch Poem written by Millard J.
Courtney of Paxtonvllle. It is a well
written production and a deep vein
of humor runs all through the poem.
Prof. D. S. Boyer of Freeburg has
written a postal card to his sister,
Mrs. Sarah Lark, of Millersburg.
The card contains 728 legible words.

Drama at Middleburgh.
The Dramatic Alliance of Free
burg will repeat the thrilling WTar
Drama, "From Sumpter to Appo
mattox" in Seebold's Hall, Saturday
evening, Mar. Cth. This drama was
such a brilliant success at Freeburg
as to guarantee an evening of rare
amusement and entertainment. The
boys had a crowded house at Free
burg and the people of Middleburgh
should patronize the boys.

Selinsgrove and Others.
John S. Hassinger was born in
Franklin towuship, Uuiou (now Suy
der) county, April 3, 1831 and died
at his late residence 2 miles West of
Middleburgh, Feb. 23, 1897, agd 65
years, 10 months and 20 days. He
is a son of Conrad Hassinger who
wafftjorn Sept. IS, 1794 and died
Dec. 11. 1851. His mother's maiden
uamo was Lucy Ann Snyder, who
born Mar. 23, I4nd died Aug. 2,

father of the deceased, was bora

Mr. Hassinger lias always been an
upright iuduutriouH citizen. He took
a great iuterewt iu education and for
many yoara served as School Direc
tor. Iu his death Fruuklin town
ship loses a valuable citizen. Tho
funeral rites to.tlc place on Saturday
when ho was laid to rest aside of his
ancestors iu JLissinger's cemetery.

Simpson was very ill at the Key
stone Hotel iu Selinsgrove. On
Thurs 1 iv last the report came to
Middleburgh that ho had died tho
iiiKbt before. Col. Simpson is one of
tho best known mou in Snyder coun
ty and at one time was the loading
lawyer in this soctiou of the state.
He was bom iu Ontario county,
N. Y. in 1827. Ia 1815 ho entered
Triuity College, at Genova, N. Y.
where he remained only one year as
he was compelled to earn' a liveli
hood, no clerke 1 in a hardware
toro in Geneva until 1818. He then
entored the office of Hon. Charles J.
Folger and becau the study of law.
May 8, 1819 he Wts admitted to the
bar and shortly afterward moved to
Solinigrove to practice his profes
sion. Iu 1872 he moved to North
umberland county but returned to
Selinsgrove in 1878 where he resided
imtil 1890 whou on account of the
infirmities of mind and body, he
was compelled to relinquish his
practice.
His family, consisting of 4 sons 1
and 2 daughters, was scattered and
of late years he has lived at Con
stantino, Mich., Northumberland,
Pa., Sunbury, Middleburgh and Se
linsgrove. His oldest son Stoddard
in practicing law in Chicago ; Horton
is Principal of ouo of the schools at
Anacostia D. C. and Frank resides
in Pittsburg. His eldest daughter
is married to Dr. H. W. Burg at
Northumberland aud Carrie resides
with her mother at Constautiuo,
Michigan.
Mr. Simpson at one timo was Dis
trict Attorney of this comity aud
during tbe Rebellion he was Cap
tain of Co. D., ISth Rout., P. V. I.
and afterward (1863) became captaiu
of Co. I., 13th Regt., P. V. He was
the first president of the Sunbury
and Lewistowii railroad company
aud for many years its solicitor.
Abel llerroM.
Abel Herrold, of Chapman towu
sliip, died at the homo of his niece,
Mrs. Charles Christie, Cleveland,
Ohio, on Friday of last week, whore
he had xpeut several mouths on a
visit. His remains wore conveyed
to his late homo, near Chapman
postollice on Saturday, and inter
ment was made iu the cemetery at
that place on Sunday. Abel Her
rold was a grandson of the late
Frederick Streets, who died iu Au
gust, f8.)0, and liko him was at one
ti mo a prosperous business man.
Mr. Horrold was borii November 11,
1811, and at tho lime of death was
aged 82 years, 4 mouths and several
days. His parents wore tho late
Goorgo an 1 Mary (Stees) Herrold.
Abel Herrold was the oldest of nine
children aud the last survivor. He
was twice married First to Magda
lene Sutlle, who died March 7, 1872,
iuthu5iilh year of her age, with
whom ho had nine childreu ; second
to Mrs. Elizabeth Kreainur, October
7, 1872. She died of a tumor, on her
72 1 birthday, August 7. ls:i5. Mr.
Herrold is survived by 3 children,
20 grandchildron and 12 great-grandchildren.

Dr. R. Rothrock of McCluro was
born iu Adamsburg Oct. 31, 1831, and
died at his late residence on Tues
day moruing. He is the oldest T.hy
sician in the county beiug 3 years
older than Dr. J. Y. Shindol of this
place aud 7 years older than Dr. B.
F. Wagonsoller of Selinsgrove. His
father, Isaac Rothrock, practiced
medicine for half a century in Sny
der and Juniata counties. The de
ceased first located iu Clarion coun
ty, where he married Catherine
Money Aug. 4, 1852. He was a sur
geon in the 78th Regt., P. V. and
was in la b by ana Anaorsonviiie
prison. After the close of the war
he practiced medicine in this nlnce
and then moved to McClure. The
cause of his death is dropsy due to
rheumatism. Aged 65 years, 4 mo.
and 18 days.

owned by (lov. Snyder. Old Simon
Roush, father of Alex. Roush, dee'd,
purchased this bureau at tho Halo of
Hon. John Snyder, a son of Gov.
Snyder, many years ago. He also
purchased an arm cnair at that salo
which was owued by Frederick
Evans, father in law of Hou. George
Kromer. Luther Roush purchased
this chair at the sale lust Saturday.
Those relics should be in possession
of some relatives of those distin
guished men. . . The Dramatic Alli
ance performances in the Opera
House was well attended and the
performers acquitted themselves
nobly. We have some bright minds
among our home talent. The sub
ject was an interesting one and the
performers have been requested to
repeat the performance. . . .Geo. A.
Botdorf, Esq.. made several trips to
the county seat on professional bus
iness.... The different applicants for
the postoffice at Freeburg are mov
ing around at a lively rate. Thoy
will be on the home ' stretch after
March 4th. '
