How "Undo Sam" Got His Na iv;.
From til l..nlli ' II mi j J mriml.
Tho nickname "Uncle Sun" as ap
plied to tho United States govern
ment, is said to havo originated as
follows: tSamuel ilson. common
ly called "Uncle Sam," was a gov
ernment inspector of beef and pork
at Troy, M. x., about A con
tractor. Albert Anderson, pui chased
a quantity of provisions, and the
barrels wore markctl A. A , An
derson's initials, and "U. S." for
United States. Tho latter initials
were not familiar to Wilsou's work
men, who inquired what they meant
A facetious fellow answered : "I
dou't know unless they mean 'Uncle

afterwards passed through llson s
hands marked in the same manner,
and he was often joked upon the
amount of his possessions. Tho
joke spread through all the depart
inuiits of the government, and bo
fore lonr the United States was
popularly referred to as "Undo

Tho Deadly Turned Down Lamp.
Who would suppose that a turned
down kerosene lamp would breed
diphtheria? We are all uncustomed
to tho deadly fumes arising from
this cause ; aud when New York was
suffering from an epidemic of diph
thetia, the board of health decided
that its presence was to be attribut
ed to the fumes of a kerosene lamp
turned down low moro than any
other singlo cause. Whether or not
this be bo, it certainly is a mistaken
kindness on the rnrt of an indul
gent mother to allow a lamp to re
main in a child's bed room with the
flame turned down. A turned down
kerosene lamp is a magazine of
deadly eas to which tho strongest
lungs cannot be safely exposed.

One of the most delightful periods
in our Annual Institute, and the
one irom wuich the most practical
benefits are derived for the average
teacher, are those sessions which
ate devoted to the discussion and

the profession in which our zealous
