in s .ioke. At the close of beauti
. . i indii.v, w hile most of uir peo
plo wi re in church, I he startling cry
of "fire! File''' broke upon the
si illness of the evening. It was in
the lloflmun building the. Ingest
structure of the village. This build
ing ontained Aucker and Knights'
s'm of general merchandise, a
dwelling depai tiiiet.t and the post
olllce.
People rushed panic-stricken
from their homes and thechurche'.
The tire was already beyond control
oft' means at hand and common
effort was directed toward prevent
ing a general conflagration. But of
this tiuTc win no immediate danger
as tlie building whh isolated, nnd the
wind blew toward the river, a di
rection favorable to the coinniuuity.
The lire continued to rage, the
wliol.' roof was in a blaze, when ).
W. Nnoke, our sturdy mail earlier,
broke in the door, rushed through
the smoke, saved part of the Postal
furniture including two mail pouch
es and their contents. Shortly after
this the lire received a draught of air
fYoti, beneath and the once beauti
ful store room became a mass of
seething llame. A veritable labyr
inth of lire; bits of burning paper
and dry goods floated in the air,
chimneys tottered and fell, ahootipg
crackers added to the excitemeut
while a quantity of gunpowder ex
ploded with a loud report, throwing
the side of the structure into atf ad
jncent lot. The heat now became
more intense, the lambent flames
shot higher and higher bearing with
them myriads of sparks that with
graceful trend followed the current
of air and passed oil' into the night.
Tin the tire raged for hours and
nil that now remains of at least 10,
imi i worth of property is debris and
ashes. It was however, partially
covered bv insurance. How the
lire originated is a mystery, the oc
ci. punts nil being absent nt tho
time. X. X. X.
