This strife over tho monnv i u
tion is more than a political or busi
lies move. It ha ns it foundation
.1 .
i no very principles oi Diisinos un-
ler winch our country has been
built up. According to my way of
thinking, all that is honorable, nil
that is just, und all that is sensible
bucks the gold standard. It. is on v
fanatics, or parties prompted bv the
expectation oi making political cap
ital out of it, or those who would
like to repudiate their honest obli
gallons, that are bucking tho Hilver
agitation. I do not mean to say by
mis, tiiut tiiore are no honest, intel
ligent people endorsing the silver
question. I believe, during tho late
war. t Here were lust us honest, nod
intelligent people who bled in the
Utiso of (Joilfedorucv. as t here were
in tho North. But arter t his excite
ment l over und tho mutter ha
been deluded bv time. I think the
advocates or silver will bo round to
bo as much mistaken now us tho cu-
lorsers or tho Confederacy were
then.
Thero are niuo votes in this ofiico ;
eight or them will bo cast for Mc
Kinloy i tho ninth will bo given to
Bryan.
I simply refer to this to illustrate,
and to disubiise tho minds of any ot
our eastern friends who have thought
thnt bocauso this is Mr. Bryan's
home, we all endorse his standard
and ideas.
I do not remombcr whether you
are personally acquainted with Mr.
Bryan, or not. I have enjoyed that
distinction for a number of yours,
aud while I have nothing but praise
for his personalities, his moral con
duct, and his froodoiu from the cor
ruption that too often surrounds a
Colitician, and while I cannot help
ut admire the wonderful gift of or
atory which he was endowed by his
Creator, still, I always have and al
ways will oppose his extreme, wild
political vagaries. He has done noth
ing to.prove himself worthy of the
responsibility of tho great office
which ho see Its. lie is unknown in
the field of political economy, among
tue statesmen of the Nation, and
among those who have nroven them-
