Dear Doctor :
Your li tter of tho 27th instant re
ceived, nnd in reply would say, that
you had nothing to do with tho up
point meiit of Joseph Liiimuaru, as
mv clerk of War Claims Committee.
The clerk to ii committee is a pet
sonal appointment, belonging to the
Chairman of the Committee, and is
made by him without consultation
with uuv one. This always has been
the practice. Appointments nro of
ten made of men who do not live in
the State or district tho Onirman is
from. 1 will give yo1: tho facts and
they will satisfy p'-rsons, who have
liccii misinformed, that VOtl had
nothing to d with whatever. I was
not a candidate for a Chairmanship,
and, b ing in my second term, did
not expect one. On tho dav the
Committees were appointed, I was
informed about two hours before
they were announced, that I va to
be made Chairman of tho War
Claims Committee, wh.vii wan o,nnr

grcHS A'nd then heen iu session iW-ar-.'v'
a month, and 1 found that hver
isuo hilU and :iiM) petitious had Teen
leferred to War Claims Commitf no.
It was of tho greatest importance
that the Committee should bejor
ganized nnd get to work. I weni to
mv home in Chambcrsburg on Sat
urday, nnd on my way 1 raadaupj my
miiiil to.nppomt Mr. tjuiuv -ifc as
clerk. I telegrnphed him to meet
mo in Hnrrisburg tho following Mon
day ou my way to Washington. He
met mo ns I had requested, nnd I
tendered him tho position. This is
the first time he knew ho was to get
the place. From this statement, you
will seo that you had no knowledge
I was to bo niado Chairman, nnd
would havo a place to givo to Mr.
Lumhard or any cue else. Therefore,
You.nor any other person, know any
thing about it. I alone am respon
sible for tho appointment. I made
it for personal, and not political
reasons. I did not place any con-i
ditioiis or limitations ou Mr. Lura
bard. I did not know who ho m
i ended to support for State Senator
in your district I never asked him
and do not intend to do so. That is
purely a privato matter with him.
Yourself, Mr. Hummel and Doctor
Tool are nil my warm personal
friends, and I entertain for all of
you tho highest esteem, nnd would
rather sutler defeat myself thnn to
interfero in your contost for the
Stnto Seuntorship, and I hope my
friends iu Snyder county, will not
for a moment think I would so far
forget mvself. as to do auvthiug to
briug about tho defeat of either of
you three gentlemen. You can make
this letter public if you see proper,
to satisfy Mr. Hummel and Doctor
Tool nnd the Republicans of your
county, that tho rumors set afloat
aootn your connection wnu iur.
Lumhard's appointment, is not cor
rect. Yours vory truly,
(Signed.) Tuao. IL Mauox.
The little daughter of Mr. Fred
Webber, Holland, Mass., had a very
bad cold and cough which he had not
beeu able to cure with any thing. I
gave him a 25 cent bottle of Cham
berlain's Cough Remedy, says W. P.
llolden, merchant and postmaster at
West ltrliufleld, nnd the next time I
saw him he said it worked like a
charm. This remedy is intended es
pecially for acute throat and lung
diseases such ns colds, croup and
whooping cough, nnd it Is famous for
itscurex. There Is no danger in giv
