didate for tho nomination of his
third term in tho State Legislature.
Mr. Focht has been a fearless
champion of the people's rights aud
with our own member, Mr. Herman,
stood us a bulwark of safety and a
refugo for the oppressed farm-rs in
our state. Our farming brethren
are loo heavily taed and it affords a
sigh of relief to know that the prob
abilities are that both Mr. Focht
aud our own stalwart sou, Mr. ILr

mer positions of trust. Mr. Focht

Edwin S. Arnold the subject of
this sketch, who is the present can
didate for congress in the eight1
teetith district, was boru at Port
Ticverton. Nov. 12th. is.liS.
Mr. Arnold is in every respect a
self-made man. His father having
been killed in the battl" of Sailor's
Creek, during the rebellion, the
maintenance of the widowed mother
and seven brotheis and sifters
early devolved up n the shoulders
of Kdwin. These duties ho dis
charged faithfully, sometime by
driving mules on the towpath of the
canal or perhaps as ploughboy for
the neighboring firmer. Ibiving a
desire for knowledge lie attended
the public schools and read the
various books to which he had ac
cess. When the state established
soldiers' orphan schools he became
a member of the one located at Mc
Alisterville. Graduating with hon
ors he set out to climb still higher.
Having no friends to help him he
again sought employment on the
canal, and there earned the money
to realize the purpose he so ardent
ly held in view.
Ho now attended the Freeburg
Academy, which was under the
principalship of tlu.t devout man
and scholar -Major W. H. Dill.
Here combining determiuat i.ui aud
genius, he made rapid progress und

came forth a promising young man
with more than ordinary ability.
For several years ho taught suc
cessfully in the public schools. He
also published a newspaper the
lt'yxtm- A' i-i illf a journal reple.e
with patriotism, instruction and en
tertainment, designed chiefly for
those, who like himself, were destin
ed to meet the difficulties of life
without a father's service. Finally
he was employed by the government
aud has continued in its service for
twelve years. His convictions are
honest, his integrity unquestioned,
and with his twelve years of public
life, he is not only competent, but
pre-eminently qualified to Ml the
position to which he aspires. In

Farmers' Alliance nud Industrial
Union of Snyder county was held in
tho hall of Franklin Subordinate ou

Meeting was largely attended and
an active interest manifested in the
work. The following officers wire
elected for the ensuing year : Pres

resolutions were unanimously
adopted.

A Narrow Esc.ife.
On Tuesday morning Samuel
Stuck of Globe Mills had a narrow
escape. He drove down the hill and
across the railroad at that place
and iu front of the passenger train
West. He drove very rapidly in or
der to get accross ahead of the train.
We havo not learned whether th
train stiuck his spring wagon i r not
but his wagon was upset and luckily
the horse stopped and Mr. Stuck
was not hurt, lie was pretty badly
frightened but he stuck to his pipe.
The wagon was pretty well shattered.
