ANCIENT HISTORY.
Th rhicr ieint kw tiu r th.
Itlaa or M. Loala.
St- Louis now rlatms a population
of 600,000, which, if supported by
figures, makes the Missouri metrop
olis the fifth In sire of the large cit
ies of the United States.
St. Louis was founded In the year
3001 K C by a protoplasm who was
off his feed and didn't care what he
did. Hariri started the place, how
ever, he didn't feel like tearing and
did not le.ive until he discovered that
It was no place for a lire, go-ahead
proto and he left, As nothing was
ever heard of him afterward, It Is be
lieved by eminent authorities that he
weot up Into the Ozark hills and
kicked himself to death for having
boomed ouch a town.
About the twentieth century, K
C the Into Mr. Chedorlaoiuer made
an expedition to St Louis aud up
to the day of hist death he regretted
it. In his memoirs he says: "Of all
the dead. past-due bursts that I ever
honored with my presence St. Louis
takes the cheese. " Mr. Chedorlaomer
was a close obxerver and knew what
he was talking about. The next per
ron of note to visit the town was
Mialm.ineer In tho year 701 11 C
lie mistook It for a national ceme
tery and did not stop off, but pro
corded on to Keokuk, Iowa.
The town wabbled on with Indiffer
ent success until William the Con
queror's time, when omo live busl
oes mau built a morgue and then
tt bttiin to crow. Abe Slupsky's
dis'overy of the Mississippi In 1421
cave the town a boom and the census
of H:T (rives It a population of 105.
When it is recalled that only 4, COO
years before all that there was of St.
LouN was a protopla-m this rapid
rowlh Is fraught with Interest. lur
ItW the last t.ou years Its progress
las teen u trifle flow but steady.
Mr. Chvdorlaomcr would scarcely
recognize the St. Louis of to-day. It
has evrral business blocks, a post
omce and a railroad lands freight and
.passengers within walking distance
of the town pump. Travelers be
tween tho north and south stop off
for lunch, lu business it Is rctro
l;:tiva Gets Ills Own Trice.
Though Mr. F. Marion Crawford
probably earns more money by his pen
than any other living writer ho is
perhaps not so well paid in propor
tion to the amount of work that he
does as is Mr. T. K Aldrlch. As a
muter of fact, Mr. Aldrlch always
puts his own price on his work, and
he Is always sure of getting It. One
magazine of New York City takes
everything that he sends It. Ho
simply writes the price iu a corner of
the MSS., and It is paid. What a de
lightful aspec t of literary success this
presents! A few weeks ago an editor
wrote to Mr. Aldrlch: "Won t you
please drop a po?m into our slot and
Jiaw out as much money as you want
for it?" Mr. Aldrlch dropped adoen
lines, as directed, and drew out 130.
